This is 1000% true. If they were both male it would be a completely ordinary enemies-to-lovers ship, and slash fandom would eat it up with a spoon.

But because one of them is a woman, it's "abuse." Because some people believe a woman can never be equal in combat with a man, she's always a "victim." (Even if she kicks his ass pretty much every time they actually fight.) And it's grooming girls to accept abuse, blah blah blah Twilight blah blah blah, all that horseshit.

It's a patronizing condescending form of "feminism" that insults the intelligence of female fans.

If it was a slash ship, it wouldn't be so widely seen

The actual Reylo antis who argue with abuse and age gap etc. would likely hate it just as much. They do with other m/m ships of a similar dynamic in plenty other fandoms. Plenty of antis also hate Kylux.

I don't agree with the antis, but I don't think this is accurate either.

It's not about believing all women are victims. It's about looking at reality, seeing how many women statistically are victims (of domestic abuse), going "This is a huge fucking problem!" and then blaming stuff like Reylo for perpetuating the problem.

Hmm. This intelligent, feminist, female fan doesn't feel at all patronized or condescended to when it comes to criticism against the ship (that includes the actual criticism, not just your strawman examples). In fact, she agrees with it...

Nope, it would still be a shitty excuse for an enemies-to-lovers ship because Kylo is just a shitty character all around.

And as others have pointed out, a m/m ship would be popular in this particular circle of online fandom, but would absolutely not have been so mainstream.

Um. No. It has nothing to do with combat ability. Its about romanticizing a young woman chasing after a man that physically tortured her, lied to and belittled her, murdered people she cared about, and is a leading member of a fascist organization run on the backs of slaves because she thinks her love can 'save him'. Honestly, the scene that soured me to the ship entirely is when he looks her deadass in the eye and says 'You are nothing. But not to me.' Its... pretty fucking classic negging. H

And in the end according to Disney, it totally pays off and he becomes 'good', to the point where his personality and mannerisms completely change and he sacrifices his life to save hers!

Exactly! (Ugh, the 'you are nothing' bit especially.)

Honestly, the "combat ability" argument here shows yet again why we need to kill the Strong Female Character misunderstanding. Apparently, if a woman has some fighting ability, then it's all OK! Everyone knows the key to a successful relationship is that both sides can hold their own in a physical fight with each other!
