I know that some people couldn't afford colour TV's into well after they became the norm, so some of these might come from recordings on a television that just didn't have colour. idk, I'm just guessing.

In the US, at least, black and white televisions were uncommon in the 90s. It is fairly unlikely that someone who did have a black and white television would have a VCR.
