I have an irrationally strong dislike of fics where my favorite characters smoke pot. I don’t even like when it’s mentioned that they smoke pot.

I tried pot a few times in my twenties, but I hate how it makes me feel. My mother and her SO toked pretty constantly when I was growing up, which completely destroyed any chance of me seeing pot smoking as cool. Also, the friends I had in high school who smoked pot were constantly stoned and it was kind of annoying. So basically, every mental association I have with pot is negative, and when characters smoke pot for fun or to relax or whatever, I just can’t relate to it at all, and also, for some reason it really turns me off.

I’m pro-legalization, and have no problem with people toking IRL. Even when I have to smell it, I don’t really care. Like, yuck, but whatever. Good for them, getting their chill on.

I don’t know why it turns me off so much when it’s my fictional faves. But it really does.

I feel the exact same way. It's becoming a lot more common to just randomly insert the characters getting high for whatever reason and I just can't do it. It's just such a strong personal feeling I have that I can't ignore it and it ends up being so frustrating at times because I don't feel like I can say anything about it either.

I hate it too. I stopped hanging out with lots of stoners because they couldn't hold conversations about anything but how great it is and was so boring and repetitive. If I read it in fic, I click the back button.

FWIW, I smoke myself, and sometimes include it in fanworks, and don't think there's anything at all wrong with being uncomfortable with seeing that in fics (though it sounds like it might be a frustrating experience for you in fandom sometimes, unfortunately). I'm sorry it comes up in fic a lot, especially since I know tons of people don't tend to content warn for it. Your reasons for disliking it make complete sense to me!

For me, sometimes it bothers me a lot more to see fic where characters I care about do things that would annoy me at most for someone to do IRL, because it's a character that's important to me, and something I'm reading to unwind. It feels more in my personal space than a random person making their own decisions about doing that thing, even though it's not real, IDK. It's not exactly rational, but for me, it can make the difference of whether I enjoy a fic or not.
