New-to-you Fandoms

(Anonymous) 2020-09-27 10:28 pm (UTC)(link)
What fandoms have you recently gotten into that, if not "new," are new to you?

I recently got into ST TOS and it's such a candy-colored trip. I love the characters and it has such fun lines. The movies with the original cast also showcased such beautiful character development and wonderful relationships. I love the Kirk/Spock dynamic, the trio friendship, and Uhura/Scotty was such a fun, pleasant surprise.

What about you?

ST:TOS is very far from being new to me, but I'm glad you're enjoying it! I'm halfway through a re-watch at the moment, my first full rewatch ever. I love it, apart from the misogyny, etc. It's so bright and upbeat and the writing is so often very good. I'm glad that even at age 13 I was capable of recognising quality writing when I saw it, like DC Fontana and dare I say it, Harlan Ellison. And no wonder Amok Time is so good; Theodore Sturgeon wrote it, and thereby spawned ten thousand porn fics.

Yeah, the sexist parts are UNCOMFORTABLE but overall, I'm just really enjoying it.

I love TOS because so often when you try to explain the plot of an episode it sounds insane and you're like "But it's good, though!"

I had started streaming classic Hawaii Five-O as just a thing to have on in the background. I wasn't in the mood for Star Trek one day, went scrolling through the other four things on CBS All Access, and decided to give it a whirl. I've never seen it before but I don't really care enough to always pay much attention so it works as background noise. It's got a sort of bland ridiculousness to it that I need in my life right now (JUST A BLUR OF DUDES IN SUITS SOLVING CRIMES), so it's kind of become my happy place.

I decided to check out the new version, which just ended this year. I've only watched maybe the first half of the first season because while it is entertaining, it's missing that bland ridiculousness (it is ridiculous in it's own way, though). I had heard people shipped the two white dudes and I was like "Of course, *I'm* not going to shi... oops, damn." I also heard it ends in an unsatisfying way, but that just means I 'm not setting myself up for disappointment.

That's how I felt about HBO Chernobyl

I recently watched MCU A:CW so now I'm enjoying all bitter post CW fics. I was out of fandom since the AOU as I shipped cyberhusbands and was too sad about Jarvis.

I recently finished The Sleuth of the Ming Dynasty Cdrama and really enjoyed it - about a low level magistrate with a talent for solving mysteries (and writing erotic romances), his Imperial Guard BFF who's an excellent chef, and a delightfully devious royal eunuch. It was a little less angsty and drama-filled than some of the other Cdramas I've watched, and that was really refreshing. Very little romance, which is fine by me. Strong found family and friendship themes, which I liked. Just a general cozy watch that I'll definitely watch again.

Kind of Resident Evil? I've been somewhat familiar with the games but not really invested in the fandom but for some reason, I'm binging people playing them (I'm a huge chicken so I can't ahha) and drawing fanart. I don't get it but I don't mind!
