It's been a while since I read the manga and the anime's been a mixed bag of really loving stuff and being reminded what doesn't hold up. Some of the humor definitely feels dated or annoying (the student council in particular I swing wildly between enjoying and finding so incredibly irritating). The gender stuff with Ritsu is still cringe and I don't expect S3 to fix that or the disappointing heterosexuality of everyone. I would root for Kureno and Uo more if Kureno wasn't a grown adult while she's a high schooler. I still think Akito gets off a little too easily considering everything. There's a lot of heart in the series and it still resonates really well, but there are definitely parts that feel tone deaf to me now more than when I first read it.

Eh, I'd argue Akito doesn't get off lightly considering hers is a story of realizing she doesn't have to continue her mother's toxicity and hatred and instead she just... Lets all of that go and decides to leave it behind and live the life she wants, including leaving behind the box she was told housed her father's spirit. She already lived the bad part, and now has to learn to function as an adult woman--her idea of normal was so completely broken that what happened was... How she thought things worked.

Keeping in mind it’s been a long while since I’ve read it and my mind may change after watching S3, even with all Akito’s trauma I just felt like some of the things she did couldn’t be washed away so easily ( she literally almost killed Rin, for example) so a bit ‘cool motive, still murder’ for me.

There's a sequel to Fruits Basket, where this is addressed. Akito didn't actually get away with it, everyone except Shigure and Tohru distanced themselves from her, and her son is bullied and was almost murdered by people, who still keep a grudge against her.
