Honestly it was when Half Blood Prince came out because at that point I was that invested in fandom and in shipping. I've since grown up and no longer put that much into fandom and don't care whether or not things become canon. I do my own thing, like what I like, and don't care what others like or what is and isn't canon. But back when the Potter fandom was my biggest fandom I was super invested in it and was devastated when Ron/Hermione and Harry/Ginny became canon.

It was devastating. That's to say the reactions to the ships in Half Blood Prince were devastatingly hilarious.

Looking back it absolutely was. It was ridiculous how seriously we all took it on all sides. Fandom is not that serious and there is not a right and wrong way to ship.
