What Was The Single Most Devastating Moment In Fandom For You?

'Devastating' is subjective and totally free for personal interpretation!

Being thrown under the bus by a close RL friend as a way into a Harry Potter BNF fan clique. That still makes me see red to remember.

Someone I knew through my first fandom died of cancer. Her name was Liz and we never got to meet in person because we lived in different countries.

We met and mainly interacted on a forum, and one day I logged on and the site had deleted all the old threads. I couldn't go back and read my friend's opinions or funny stories anymore.

The day one BNF in my fandom basically split the fandom into 'evil' people who critiscised them and 'good' people who didn't, and went on to take all the 'good' people into their own private community where, from what I hear, they formed a 'cult of personality'.
At the time I didn't share the details of their behind the scenes harassment of multiple people, thinking that would be dragging people into the drama, but now it feels like if I'd been more open about how much of an ass they were maybe things would be better.

Having a dear friend I'd known for 10+ years suddenly pass away.

Mine is so dumb, but I really hated the final episode of season four of Sherlock and when I went to bitch about it, everybody was really condescending because I wasn’t smart enough to know that there was gonna be a secret episode.

When I was eleven, I read "Seven Little Australians" and cried very hard at the end, if that counts.

After learning that my best friend had passed away (we'd started off as fandom friends), I discovered that she'd deleted all her fanfictions. Her death is obviously the bad part here, but even after several years, I cannot help but wish her words -- and with them her immense talent, generous spirit, and just overall warmth -- would still live on online.

(M, I miss you so much. :()

When this asshole came out of nowhere and split a community with drama and fake shit. They spread rumors about comm members and broke up relationships, and had the comm owner in their back pocket so by the time I said anything, I was accused of being the jerk. I was told I "did WAY worse" in the past as if to justify asshole's actions. Which, I won't lie, could have been true, but comm owner was barely even around while everything was going on. Also, I never broke up comms/relationships on a whim to satisfy MY wants, everyone else be damned.

Anyway, A (for asshole, of course) had their own comm but kept bringing in their people, not to mix and mingle, but to basically make it THEIR second comm. So of course, A would accuse anyone raising concerns about it of being exclusionary jerks. Oddly, for all they preached about communities not being static, they never seemed to understand it also applied to them.

I left after giving the finger to the comm owner (not my proudest moment) and surprise, surprise, that's when people started to wise up to A. I tried joining other comms but it was never quite the same. I ended up in a couple of semi-stable groups but never felt that closeness I had with friends in that first comm. Cue tiny violin. Eventually, I did return to the old comm after A was thoroughly exposed and fled, but I barely recognized anyone. At least there was no more drama, I guess.

Going to see a midnight showing of I Want To Believe (the second X-Files movie) and being utterly devastated by how bad it was. I was at the height of my X-Files obsession at the time and the hype in fandom had been at a fever pitch for months.

The worst part was, the fandom consensus on IWTB was largely positive for the first couple of months after it came out. It was like people were just too invested in it being good to allow themselves to acknowledge it...wasn't. So I went into it thinking it would be at least decent, because the fans who'd seen it already were mostly saying it was good. A few months later, almost everyone had come around to agreeing it was bad.

the death of a celebrity I love. Not mentioning any names because this person isn't very popular here.

Not really devastating, but I stopped reading manga for years because I was disgusted by the obsession with youthful characters and surprise underage content.

I was in a fandom for a movie, when one of the actors was in another film that was highly controversial. It split the fandom, some stopped liking him to the point that it nearly ruined the character while some were still obsessed with him. It just was not the same after that.

I was really disappointed when S3 of Sherlock finally aired and was even worse than I’d been anticipating. Like, “I wash my hands of canon” kind of bad. I wouldn’t say I was devastated, because I’d been in fandom too long and been burned too many times by other things I was fannish about to be truly devastated. But I was disappointed, disillusions, and a little disgusted.

sorry if it's not a single moment so much as a comprehensive occurrence, but everything that happened with Vic Mignona when his trial information went public. he used to be a friend of mine before he started voice acting. he got too busy to hang out online and talk props around the time he was cast as Ed Elric. everything that came out in the past 2 years is stuff I didn't know about and I can't excuse it anymore as him just being stupid and ignorant. I've had shitty friends that I had to cut off, before, but their sphere of influence was usually less than ten mutual acquaintences. This was cutting off someone with hundreds of thousands being influenced by his actions. It still hurts.

A repeating moment - kind of my version of Groundhog Day. I'll be well on the way to making a fandom friend, sometimes be good IRL friends with them, then, after beta reading each others' stories multiple times, they'll ask me to do a novel-length story.

Cue ghosting, yelling, and end of friendship. I don't mind if they don't like the comments I've made, which are always in good faith. But at least thank me for my time? Or acknowledge receipt of the comments? I'm disabled and can't expend the energy any more, so I'm no longer beta-reading except for people I absolutely trust.

So tired of this.

Honestly it was when Half Blood Prince came out because at that point I was that invested in fandom and in shipping. I've since grown up and no longer put that much into fandom and don't care whether or not things become canon. I do my own thing, like what I like, and don't care what others like or what is and isn't canon. But back when the Potter fandom was my biggest fandom I was super invested in it and was devastated when Ron/Hermione and Harry/Ginny became canon.

Someone sending me messages on Deviantart and asking for a very specific erotic art requests. First one asking for a Naruto/Sasuke diaper fetish piece and being forced to acknowledge the fetish side of DA for the first time; then there was the request from the infamous white bread guy for Marceline/Bubblegum from Adventure time - and learning about him still makes my soul feel dirty.

out of all of the devastating moments i've had, the one that affected me personally? happened when i was stepping back into rp after a year long absence.

one of the mods called me out almost immediately because i was subscribed to another user they didn't like. they asked me to justify my relationship with [other user] and why i should be allowed in the group.

i just up and left. deleted everything. it probably made me seems childish, but i didn't know what else to do. it just felt so stupid, and i was so upset over it too. i already have trust issues, and that experience just made me feel worse about it.

When fandom left LJ and went to tumblr instead of coming here or some other platform. Tumblr really sucked the fun out of it for me, to the point that I don’t see myself ever engaging in a fannish community again.

"Moment" and "single" are also open to interpretation. 😁😉

The Spn spin-off not getting picked up. (^Fave character in icon.)

Eurovision 2020 being cancelled.

Various fic I read that devestatated me so much I cried and couldn't sleep.

Obsessing over what Anton Yelchin being dead might mean for my OTPs which sounds psychopathic, but I don't really care about actors, if that makes sense? It's a moot point anyway, because there'll most likely not be another film.

I already said one but another was when Photobucket started to charge for their image upload service after about 10 years where it was for free.

Not only did so many fanworks like icons/banners/memes/etc get lost but I feel like it had a major effect on platforms like Livejournal , Dreamwidth and anywhere else that replies on having an available image upload service. Imgur is alright but can be limited and in don't think the folks managing the site like to be used as just an image upload service (like when imgur blocked their images from showing up on LJ).
