It's not a huge plot point. But that it gets taken from Xu Feng and given to Run Yu does mark their changing status.

And Xu Feng uses is on Run Yu near the end.

But you're right - there's a lot of drama in that scene, that kinda fizzles out.

I still say that a version where Maxim was the actual bad guy wouldn't be a single bit more original. The mysterious dashing new husband turning out to be the evil villain with literal skeletons in his closet whom the wife as the heroine must overcome/defeat hasn't been original for, say, the last ~400 years.
