Actually... the danger was that they didn't drink blood but consumed/slaved SOULS from their victims with blood as conduct (as an ancient belief that dated to Ancient Greece) or through people's breath (in Chinese folklore). There's even a debate over this in Dracula with Renfield claiming aghast he needed no souls.

They can also sustain themselves on animal blood. Read on Dracula, he fed on rats too aside of the crew aboard the Demeter.

Most modern vampires completely idiotic to me. Because they lack the soul-sucking danger. Ohhhh they suck human blood sexily. Scary! Just a step above Twilight and their "Vegetarians" vampires.

The sleeping over the day depends on the region as well. They are nocturnal hunters, with exceptions (Russian vampires are actually daytime hunters), sunlight seldom ever traditionally affected them. If you read the four big classics (The Vampyre, Carmilla, Varney, Dracula) there wasn't any "bursting into flames". Dracula waltzes in the daylight and all. Varney committing suicide by throwing himself into a volcano is the most anticlimatic ending ever. HE'S the original emo vamp, bet none of the youngsters can TOP that CURSED melodrama.

Hollywood vamp is just a step above Twivamp doesn't make them better. What makes Twilight fail isn't the "vampires" but the fail, uninspired and dull characterization, "plot" etc.

The vampire image is NEVER the same. Not all vampires suck blood, not all vampires are affected by sun, etc. That's a mistake brought by Hollywood and infuriates me. I can see the OP's point. I still hate Twilight because is badly written.

You're much more well-versed in Vampire folklore than I am. Most of what I've read comes from the Eastern European tradition of blood-sucking corpses who sleep in graves, etc.

Cool stuff to know, though.

Thanks. There's a lot of vampire differences (nobody ever writes about vampires made via cat jumping on their caskets or how werewolves/wolfmen upon their deaths become vampires), so while I understand this Twivamp hatred myself, I also understand the image of the vampire has been watering down little by little from the Victorian times that present the vampires as ALWAYS a seductive and dangerous foreigner (except for Varney who was English and ugly, he was the first emovamp looking for his lost humanity and nobody has top him in WANGST IMO) to the Hollywood's vampires (that remove a lot of danger and add weaknesses, specially the sunlight, they never got), to modern times (Anne Rice?) and now the Twilight vampires. I'm not really surprised.

Vampires began more or less in their oldest myths as female evil personifications (connected more to snakes and cats than bats and wolves) just like the wolfmen were male. Then the figure was given a more masculine-dominant allure (ironically). TL;DR: The OP has a point. If we go by "real" vampires, let's forget all we know for centuries and bring back the lamia, the empusas or lemures. It has changed so much even in the Victorian tales the original vampires are unrecognizable (Carmilla came closer to her companions).

This is not to defend the Twilight vamps, but they are hardly the first sparkling (bishounen sparkles!) with zero "Hollywood" traits. It's like Meyer wanted to do a bad shoujo vampire manga in prose. Which loses the visual eye candy appeal. XD

She should have been reading Hellsing instead. Kouta Hirano's a flawed storyteller and his character can be too powerful, but he was able to portray soul-sucking vampires sympathetic and tragic without wangst.

It's interesting stuff, really. I do remember reading a few older stories with soul-sucking or vitality-stealing female vampires.

And yes, I'm a fan of Hellsing, despite some of the flaws.

Yeah, back then the blood wasn't just a sexual symbolism, it also was the conduct of the soul/spirit, so drinking someone's blood meant to take their soul or at least part of it (also this was rescued in Dracula). You don't know how much I grinned that Hirano of all people researched and got that right (getting the balls to take a further step and showing us the spirits and all). Meyer in a way copied the fictional (not folklore) Japanese vampires, they are supernatural, not the undead.

Hellsing's one of those exceptions... I love it too and I have no guilt about it. Excellent ideas, sometimes poor executions. Constructs and deconstructs the Dracula spin offs, shows sympathetic REAL vampires, a powerful female van Helsing and actual interesting vampire "romance" (with Integra/Alucard and, specially, Pip/Seras) which isn't sappy or sexualized or mushy that I feel more realistic and touching. So it rocks.

Wish he had more character interaction and less Walter's childbearing hips.

You win for having a Pip icon. He's my crush next to Integra.
