I'm trying to think of an example and can't, except for Thursday Next. Got any recs for good examples of this?

Recs: Dark Places, Sharp Objects, Fury Road, Fringe, Battlestar Galactica (reboot), Star Trek Discovery all have female protags who have been through some dark stuff. I'm not a fan of Sharp Objects, tbh, because the protag freaks me out with how she sexualizes her younger sister, but my sister likes it a good deal bc the MC comes through against all odds.

You'd probably like Mercedes Lackey's "Vows and Honor" series (it's two novels and a short story collection.) It's about a pair of sworn sisters (one swordswoman, one sorceress) who both have Significant Baggage which they deal with in their own ways on the way to their shared happy ending. There's a kinda sequel about the granddaughter of the sorceress going out and becoming a mercenary fighter herself, "By the Sword," which is my favorite of Lackey's novels. She also acquires Baggage but not quite to the extent that VAH does.
