I'm trying to think of an example and can't, except for Thursday Next. Got any recs for good examples of this?

+1

Have no idea why. (most likely because I cannot deal with life both real or fictional)

Smart and/or geeky/nerdy, more often side characters that main ones.

The really unlucky ones. Tragic backstory? Always picked last? Fell in love with the wrong person? Stepped in a puddle but it was deeper than it looked? Those are my people.

Yeah, same here.

idk if angsty, complicated WWII gay romances are your thing but if they are you should definitely read Mary Renault's "The Charioteer"

Recs? This sounds good but I can't think of any myself.

NAYRT--T. Kingfisher/Ursula Vernon's stuff is good for this.

The genuinely good and kind male heroes who aren't necessarily perfect but who absolutely try their best to save everyone/the day, especially if they have to grapple with their own moral codes vs doing what's right. I just love me a classic LG archetype dude.

Absolutely messy as shit women. Either as flat-out villains, or as someone who starts out bad but gets better. Also nerdy-ladies, I love smart women.

I know it's SO overdone but...character who was mistreated/bullied/lied to who then turns toward darkness. I was severely bullied at school and then (even though I fit in more) still a bit of an outsider at university. I would never use that as an excuse to be a dick to other people but I do like that fiction indulges the part of me that thinks "what if I tried to get my revenge in the worst possible way?" - I mean, in reality that never happens and there's a reason it's not a desirable path to take! I guess in fiction it appeals because it shows what things could be like if you weren't a better person? Idk.

Will also say that I prefer it when characters who fit that mould either get some genuine growth or their comeuppance.

the smart ones who tend to be a bit feisty for girls, southern belles in nature. Sweet characters who are ruthless. Good doesn't equal nice.

Warrior poets who are a bit clueless at romance for boys. They think they're more suave than they are, can be overdramatic. Or broody boys with squishy teddy bear hearts. Sometimes these combine.

I prefer competent characters across the board. Like, I don't mind untrained characters, but give them training! They aren't going to be magically good at something right off the bat.

Well written, complex ones mostly.

I like heroic characters who are willing to sacrifice themselves for others, who are genuinely heroic and hopeful and who care about others.

I'm also drawn towards all sorts of villain characters.

I'm also drawn towards characters who start out as villains and then end up on believable, well-written redemption arcs.

I love mentor characters a lot.

I love flawed heroes who want to do the right thing and end up doing the wrong thing for the right reasons. I also love flawed heroes who go on a journey and grow and change and become better people.

I love leader characters who inspire those around them. And those who help leader characters behind the scenes.

Awkward nerds, especially if they're given an underdog story. I generally love underdog narratives, but the nerd who persists to keep going and gets to keep their awkwardness makes me feel like I can approach the world a little more easily.

Ditzy seeming characters who actually are kind of geniuses. I've had a long journey with my internalized misogyny.

the Good Leader type, someone who leads the pack/unit/group/whatever and is patient (but takes absolutely no shit), responsible, self-sacrificing, disciplined, practical, and deeply committed to their personal sense of duty and ethics (but all bets are off if their subordinates/people they feel responsible for are in danger.) Bonus points if a) we get to see how they learned to be like this through harsh experience or personal failure/struggle which taught them hard lessons (esp. if they still secretly struggle with it at times) b) they have a secret/classified Other Side that only comes out under specific circumstances c) we sometimes get to see them being a goof or having a sense of humor as well. So. Many. of my faves fall into this template it is not even funny

The ones who frequently choose to be kind but have trouble accepting kindness themselves - or even admitting that they need it.

And probably because the combination of "good person" + "needs a hug" + "self-worth issues/wariness" makes my heart twist. Someone working to make the world better for somebody while believing they don't deserve that themselves. Gets me every time.

Overpowered characters, the ones who come into the story and fuck everything up. Also, tricksters. So, Q from Star Trek is a prime character for me.

Brilliant, charismatic, aloof men who are secretly vulnerable and messed up.

The quintessential example: Tony Stark.

When it comes to female characters, I'm not sure I have a favorite type. I love variety.

Seemingly stereotypical tough guy jocks who effortlessly respect and empower women. See: Raleigh from Pacific Rim. So wholesome.

either quiet, soft spoken nerds who tend to hang to the sides; or aloof, snarky loners using that as a front for how lonely they actually are internally (or both, although that's not common)

The crazy calm ones. When a crazy problem appears and they are chill as all hell, I know they are my people. It doesn't matter if you break down later, if you are cool as a cucumber in a crisis, I know you and understand you
