NAYRT--T. Kingfisher/Ursula Vernon's stuff is good for this.

AYRT - lol at other anon, I was going to say Ursula Vernon! My favourite from her is Digger, from her webcomic of the same name [https://diggercomic.com/]. The comic is complete, and won a Hugo Award back in 2012. Digger is a wombat, and she's forthright and practical and kind and helpful, and it turns out (to her dismay) that these are wonderful traits to take on a quest...

I'm going to put in a rec here for the Tiffany Aching books, by Terry Pratchett. Most Pratchett protagonists are good but aren't particularly nice, but Tiffany is an 11-year-old girl who goes into Fairyland to retrieve her little brother (who's a bit of a brat) and who almost dies several times and manages to maintain her compassion the whole way through.
