I read most of those except 1. I tend to skip over those. I bookmark stories that are generally 10,000 words or longer.

I've noticed something of a trend that the best written ones in my fandom tend to hover around 7,500 words in length (a good plot VS porn ratio) so I guess I actively seek out between (4) 5,000 - 10,000 words.

5) Between 10,000 words and 40,000 words

IF I want a good story.

4) Between 5,000 words and 10,000 words

If I'm looking for a shippy oneshot or PWP

I'll read anything up to 10K. Maybe 15-20K if it's a one-shot with lots of sexual tension.

Over 20K? Nope.

3-6. Never 1.

If it's 6, I usually check out the ending first to see if it's worth reading all the way through.

I don't read anything under 1k, period.

Once you're over 10k,what I've found is that I like longer fics more but the quality becomes much more important the longer a fic gets, and it becomes really hard to find fix that's both satisfyingly long and enjoyable. So in practice the most common is 5k to 10k probably.

4-6. I try not to start anything that's over, like 80k if it's not finished though. Nothing like getting to chapter 15 of ??? at 150k and you're like... WELL FUCK, NOW I HAVE A LOT TO REMEMBER WHEN THIS UPDATES IN FOUR MONTHS. Or next year. Or the next year and a half when a notification pops up on that fic that literally started in 2000 when you were a teenager and WELL, HERE WE ARE.

I'll read under 1000 if the summary sounds really good and/or it has a ship or specific tag that I'm looking for and its one of the few fics there.
Otherwise I read pretty much between 3 & 4 (and at most up to 17,000 words) when I want a relaxing read that I know I can finish in one sitting. If I have the time to do so I'll read 40,000 once in a while.

I'll read any length, but I do prefer fics that are 5k and up. Loooove the fics that are 50k+ or even 100k+ (or are very clearly going to end up being that, in the case of WIPs). It's great having what's basically a whole book to read.

I don't really care if they're WIPs, either; I just subscribe and follow the updates. And if it never gets finished...eh, there're a couple fics that I'm dying to see get updated, but it's not a dealbreaker. I enjoyed what I did get to read.

Most of mine are one shots and are a little over a thousand words, but I'm working on a longer one right now and it's past the 5,000 word mark.

Oops, replied to the wrong thread! Most of the fics I read are one shots and they tend to be between 1,000 and 3,000 words.

Over 40k! Though I enjoy reading WIPs and if a shorter story has an interesting enough premise/summary I'll give it a go, but I like having a fic that'll take me hours and hours to read.

A long fic is nice sometimes. I usually don't do over 100k though because it feels like they probably don't really know where they're going. I feel like with a 100k word count, they could probably trim the fat.

I tend not to read a whole lot of fanfiction these days, but I probably read #3 most if I do. Not because I aim to do so, but just because it works out that way. I'm good with any length fic (used to read several from #5 and #6), but it had better be a damn good story.

3,4,5, or 6

My preference would be 5 or 6, but I probably read 3 and 4 more often since there's more of it.

I will only stop filtering out 1 and 2 if the fandom is tiny.

I generally read fics that have over 10k words (your 5th and 6th options seem the best). Sometimes less.i honestly never do a word count because...eh. I mostly check out the number of chapters. I generally don't like to touch things under 10 chapters (if they're not complete).

Granted, some people write short chapters, but majority have at least a couple of pages that constitute a chapter.

I happily read #3-6, but my first choice tends to be over 40K. Unless it's late and I want something I can finish before bed, in which case I'll look for something around 5K give or take.

Mostly #5 there, I suppose - I do read a huge amount of fic that's over 40k, but it's not certain that I'll actually finish it. I guess once a story clears 200k and there's still no ending in sight, that's usually the point that I give up because the author doesn't seem to know where they're going.

Re: How long do fics you read most often tend to be?

Any time I search for fic the first thing I do is sort by word count. I'll basically go down the list until I get to around 700 words. I'll read any length fic for writers I really enjoy or ships that are rare/I really like. (or when I run out of fic to read since I basically live off fic) So I want to say #5-6 as a majority, (probably around the range of 25,000+ words) unless there isn't any.
Recently I've been a fan of rarer pairs so most of what I can find is around #2-4.
