For the most part I agree.

I do think in some situations it's cool if the narrative plays it like X might be the love of Y's life, but then later you realize Z is actually the love of Y's life. But in that case, it's not that they're both the love of Y's life. It's that Y and X loved each other, but it just never quite fit, and then Z comes along and it's like, oh, this.

However, the longer a pairing takes to get together, the more annoying it's going to be if the writers decide to go a different way. If a pairing takes four/five/six seasons to get together, it's going to be really, really annoying if the characters break up and get with other people.

Yeah, that's why Mary Crawley's second pairing in Downton Abbey is really unsatisfying for me. They poured so much time, effort, and set up into Mary and Matthew getting together. As a viewer, I invested in it, and I felt annoyed when they were like, "Oh well, but the second guy's great!"

AYRT - Oh god, yeah. I stopped in early 3 seasons of Downton Abbey and when I heard that they were going to kill Matthew I was like, "Welp, glad I stopped where I did."

They built up Mary/Matthew way too well, and I was way too invested to ever be chill with moving on and seeing Mary paired with someone else.

My mom never gets super into shows, but she was so mad about matthew dying that she ragequit DA and wrote a facebook rant about how the show writers were determined that no child on the show would get to have 2 parents, lol

I hate that paring just because they are so uncomfortable. They have nothing in common. It felt forced and just something to add drama.

The second guy was less interesting but I dont think they played it as he was also the love of Mary's life.
