I think HIMYM is actually kind of a subversion because a lot of his friends group is rolling their eyes at Ted's next "the one." Lily even had a whole monologue about how she didn't want Ted bringing random women to important events because it ruined pictures and how he was always convinced this one was "the one."

Like, it's played straight for Ted but not in the actual canon.
