I'm not sure what you mean by "respect"? People can ship whatever they want, a non canon ship can certainly be more compelling than the canon one (though it's subjective what constitutes "compelling" tbh.) But you can't de-canon a canon pairing. Ignore it in your fanworks, sure, write lengthy essays on why it sucks/your preferred ship is better, sure, we've all done that, but it's still gonna be the canon ship. You don't have to justify your preference with death of the author, you just have to like one ship better than the other.
