Re: This is way late, lol

IA so hard, with the archetypes thing. The thing with the bands is that most of them have this prebuilt mythos. Especially MCR/LOTMS, because it wasn't just a behind-the-scenes look at five guys getting together writing songs, it was a really compelling story about their personal lives and what they went through.

And then those stories get repeated over and over and they take on a certain amount of fictional shine in the retelling, and that's where RPF comes in to say "What happened next?" and "But why did they do that?"

And then we start extrapolating from that and writing the crazy AUs like that comic (which IMO is one of the best things bandom has produced). But yeah, I have it saved on my computer and if any of my friends found it THEY WOULD KNOW EXACTLY WHO THE CHARACTERS ARE AND THAT I AM READING WEIRD SEA CREATURE ADVENTURE COMICS ABOUT THEM. D:

Which is a shame, because if it weren't so weird I would totally be forcing them to read it and squee with me. :< Oh bandom, y so socially unacceptable? Which I suppose brings us back to your original point.

Late? Rock and roll all night!

Yeah! Still need to watch LOTMS, am horrible noob Dissecting what makes people tick is fun, and once we figure that out, we can apply it to different situations. Like, in the wolfshirt's community Sixties AU, Gerard's contemporary musical messiah complex becomes anti-war activism. Or in the gymnastics AU, Bob's extreme competence, stability, and stoicism cast him as the long-suffering Coach Bryarski. Personality types/tropes and motivations are fun to play around with.

I haven't got the Oceanic Adventures saved on my computer, but I was mightily tempted by the hardcopy. If it weren't about real people, I'd be all over that- it's quirky and fun, with pretty art. I wonder if I'd like it as much if I didn't know who it was about, though. The story is kind of cliché (boy meets boy, social obstacles cause temporary separation and much plaintive sighing, boys flout social conventions and live happily ever after), but having it be about Frank and Gerard makes the characters more...well, important to us, and more invested in seeing them get their happy ending. If it were written with original characters, we wouldn't have any pre-formed emotional attachments.

...wow, that got long fast.

Yeah, I guess to a certain extent all fanfic is lazy reading/writing, just because you don't have to actually take the time to get to know the characters and form emotional attachments, you're already invested in them.

I know what you mean about the hardcopy of Oceanic Adventures, too, because omg, it looks gorgeous, but. Kind of difficult to explain on your bookshelf. D: But I need to have it on my computer because our internet has a tendency to go AWOL and sometimes you just need a FUCKIN' MONTAGE! to reread.

And I really want to beg you to watch LOTMS, but augh. You probably shouldn't. If you love the boys now, you'll just... explode over them being so... them. All ~*~passionate~*~ and ~*~intense~*~ and ~*~battling their personal demons~*~.

TRUE STORY: I used to be one of those "OMG CRAPPY EMO BANDS ARE SO CRAPPY" people (without, you know, actually listening to the music. good job, me!) and my friend bought the DVD, I ended up watching with her and going "...Damn. These guys are actually pretty awesome." MY PREJUDICES, SMASHED! NOOOOOO!

Btw, it was really fun talking with you, anon. ♥ This is the longest discussion about bandom I've had in ages. I usually just tend to lurk a lot.

I wouldn't call it lazy, really! Just...shorthand! The fastest way to get the most immediate effect. If what you're really interested in writing about is the emotional interactions between the characters and the ways they interact with their environment, then using pre-established characters is just a way to deliver the goods in the most efficient way possible. Since I'm a total nerd, I would refer you to Henry Jenkins, but since he's all the way across the room and it's warm under the covers instead I give you to Dr. Merlin's Soapbox (http://firefox.org/news/articles/1022/1/quotYou-Mean-Everyone-Brought-Potato-Saladquot/Page1.html). Fourth paragraph down, specifically. rest of her stuff's pretty good, too~

I do have the hard copy of Mary Borsellino's Sharpest. Totally worth it. That one's a little easier to explain, though, because it's about her, and her experiences with music and depression. Following MCR around the country is almost incidental.

Oh, lordy, I can't even get through "Making Of..." videos for the music videos. They're just too adorable. Augh. My internal conflict, it is great!

PFFF. I WAS THE SAME. I despised MCR on the basis of...what was it? Oh yes. The first five seconds of "Helena." That was it. I didn't even listen to the actual song. And then, later, I heard "Teenagers" and rapidly re-ordered my priorities, but by then the touring for Black Parade was over. WOE.

Same to you! It's been a pleasure having somebody to talk with. If you'd like, I can un-anon, and maybe we could be friends?

Another late reply, sry :(

[identity profile] elementplatinum.livejournal.com 2009-01-03 07:49 am (UTC)(link)
You're right, "lazy" is a pretty harsh generalization. Shorthand is much better - because yeah, it's just nice to be able to get into a story where we can identify the archetypes straight off, like you were saying earlier. That's a great piece of meta, btw. I love reading about people's take on fandom (as you can probably tell from this whole conversation, lol).

And yes please to the friending! Like I said, I do just tend to lurk a lot and say very little, but I'd love to have you on my flist. :D

think nothing of it, really

[identity profile] immelmanturn.livejournal.com 2009-01-05 11:20 am (UTC)(link)
I appreciate how your late replies are maybe 13 hours afterwards, and mine are three days.

And I know, right? It makes me despair of writing fan-cultural-analysis pieces for class assignments, because I'll read brilliant writing like that and it just makes me want to throw up my hands.

Re: think nothing of it, really

[identity profile] elementplatinum.livejournal.com 2009-01-05 11:26 am (UTC)(link)
Lol, I just get terribly paranoid about it when you're anon, because obviously you don't get the reply emails like I do. But anyhow-

LET THE FRIENDINGS COMMENCE! \o/

My secret method is to leave a new tab open for each comment I respond to, and just hit "Refresh All" every now and then.
