Turns out tons of people escape abusive relationships and don't turn into total shitheels because of it, tho

Basically. For every "my sad past explains/excuses my assholery" asshole, there's lots of people who survived the same or similar awful shit without becoming massive assholes.

I mean, I've been assaulted by both cis men and cis women, but I'm not running around claiming only trans and non-binary people are safe to be around.

And also Rowling's focus on transphobia is weird if it's a trauma response because afaik she's only been abused by cis men who dressed in standard menswear, not trans women in dreses, gay drag queens, or cis male transvestites.

If she was sincere but misguided in fearing being attacked by cis men, why is she so laser focused on fear of (what she thinks are) cis men in dresses rather than cis men generally?

I mean, the reason is transphobia, but...

Because the policy of self ID allows men to be in women's spaces, and the need for women to have protected spaces has not diminished. If we were living in a post-domestic violence world, cool. Otherwise? No. I'm still going to want women's shelters to be able (legally) to keep men out.

I believe we should be making the government fund the sector to have adequate capacity and facilities so that trans women can have protected spaces too. I just don't think the best solution is to put everyone under one roof.

So until this happens (which, going from the way things are at this point, will be approximately never) trans women just have to suck it up and not go anywhere, cool cool.

Which is what the vast, vast majority of women seeking help already face because the sector is disastrously under-funded?

Yep. It's the evil women that are the problem. Not the government that is failing all of us. Solid deduction there.

DA- I mean, it's obvious from your language that you don't even consider trans women women so I don't know if this conversation would ever go anywhere.

(Anonymous) 2020-10-10 05:47 am (UTC)(link)
DA - are there actually any times that someone has been attacked in a women's shelter by a trans woman? Or a man in drag, for that matter? Kinda curious at this point.

(Anonymous) 2020-10-10 06:07 am (UTC)(link)
trying to make terf talking points sound reasonable is disgusting no matter how much you couch it in "oh but the trans women get their own thing!"
men can walk into women's bathrooms there is no magical force field preventing them from doing that that would get disabled by ~self ID~.
and what kind of dumbass scenario are you envisioning at the women's shelter? you think if a woman was abused by another woman they would just invite her into the shelter she's at? are you daft?

(Anonymous) 2020-10-11 12:13 am (UTC)(link)
Women can security on men in toilets. They can't do this with self-ID and can only wait until something happens.

(Anonymous) 2020-10-10 06:08 am (UTC)(link)
AYRT--I'm a cis woman. I've been assaulted by other cis women. I hate to break it to you, but locking out the vanishingly tiny number of cis men who might crossdress in order to gain access to a women's shelter and hunt for victims will not ensure that the shelter is free of abusers, including sexual abusers. But it will and does hurt lots of trans women.

I would be more worried for a trans man at a men's shelter (even though they might prefer it), and way, way more worried for a trans woman at a men's shelter, than for cis women sharing a women's shelter with trans men.

Everyone deserves not to be assaulted, ever. But there is no way to guarantee that safety for anyone or everyone. Shelter residents are already routinely denied things like privacy, contact with partners and/or children, bodily autonomy, and even religious freedom for the chance of not freezing or starving to death on the streets, not to mention stuffed back into the closet if they're LGBT+ and the only shelter in their area is run by the likes of the salvation army.

You're asking that trans women die waiting for a massive, mythical organization to come up with massive amounts of funding for a massive amount of new shelters, when funding for existing, already chronically underfunded shelters/food banks/aid programs is being vacuumed up at unprecedented rates thanks to COVID, out of fear of an either vanishingly rare or so far hypothetical threat.

Trans women are rarer than cis women, but no more (or, to be fair, less) likely to assault fellow shelter residents. Or dorm/apartment/wherever residents.

And there are way easier ways for cis men to find victims than disguising themselves as women. It's such a weird thing to focus on when the overwhelming majority of cis male abusers never bother disguising themselves as anyone. It's like worrying more about falling out of a 747 at cruising altitude than being hit by a car.

+10000 Allll of this. Blaming fellow victims for the HYPOTHETICAL behavior of abusers is so fucking weird.

(Anonymous) 2020-10-10 07:42 pm (UTC)(link)
*Standing ovation* Thank. You. Perfectly said, every last word of this.

(Anonymous) 2020-10-10 06:46 am (UTC)(link)
It sounds like a rational argument, up until you remember that there used to be people who opposed gay marriage, because they believed that straight people would pretend to be gay to marry for tax frauds. It doesn't become a more reasonable argument just because it's aimed at denying rights to the T in LGBT, as opposed to the G and L.

(Anonymous) 2020-10-10 03:53 pm (UTC)(link)
You’re comparing women being abused to tax fraud?

(Anonymous) 2020-10-10 01:25 pm (UTC)(link)
Fuck off and suck a cactus, misogynistic TERF cunt.

(Anonymous) 2020-10-10 08:35 pm (UTC)(link)
I’m shocked to see misogyny from a TRA

(Anonymous) 2020-10-10 09:43 pm (UTC)(link)
Nah, not misogynist. Just eat sand and fuck off into the aether.
