If this is true or not is debatable, but I did meet my(girl/Bi) first girlfriend though our like of BL/Slash. I`m not as much into BL now but it did bring me there somehow. Also, a conterpoint: I do like selfship+have lots of m/f ships as well as m/m & f/f.

I think it's more likely that Fandom in geral tend to atract people who brakes the main """normal""", like Queer/minorities/survivors/disabilities(both mentaly and physical)/etc, and slash so happens to be prevelent in Fandom spaces.
