Yeah, I was put off the Rivers of London series for ages, despite it otherwise being very relevant to my interests, because the POV character is like this in the first book, even with his female best friend. As it turns out he very quickly gets over it, but if other people whose opinions I trust hadn't recced the following books, I wouldn't have continued.
