I don't give them an iota of leeway. It's the rotten core of Americas capitalism being exposed - money from China trumps Democracy and people fighting for it.

My heart bleeds for Hong Kong and those poor students who have been abandoned by the world for fear of China.

If they have family in China, whose safety they have to worry about, they might not have a choice.

This. I'm not sure the anon above you gets that people in China and/or their families have been sent to reeducation camps or disappeared outright for so much as breathing a word against the people in power.

nayrt - I think a lot of people don't really understand how effective this threat is or how terrible the human rights abuses are. It's true that many Americans take their freedom of speech and freedom of the press for granted and forget that other people in other countries don't necessarily have the same protections.

Anon that the AYRT was replying to

There's still another option here - stay silent and don't say anything at all.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but we're talking about actors who are Chinese nationals here, right, not Americans? I don't really see how that applies in such a scenario

AYRT Sorry I was unclear on that point. I meant on the additional pressure from American studios on actors not to offend China because of the Chinese market.

You can condemn human rights abuses and still recognize that not everyone has the same degree of freedom to speak out against them (or has the same amount of information about them or hasn't been fed propaganda dismissing them)

If a Chinese celebrity expresses an opinion that aligns with what the Chinese government would want them to say, I have to withhold judgment about what they might really think but I can condemn the heck out whatever they are expressing an opinion on.
