How to Deal with Trick or Treaters?

(Anonymous) 2020-10-13 08:25 am (UTC)(link)
I adore dressing up and giving out candy for Hallowe'en, but obviously with COVID this year is not going to be the same.
Initially I just wanted to leave a bowl of candy out on the step with a sign that read, "Pick One Of Each!", someone else mentioned a bag of goods that you refill between the groups so no contact is necessary, my mother told me to drop a bag of candy in each mailbox of the families in my neighbourhood.
I want to celebrate but I don't know how and keep it safe at the same time...

Any Tips?

I'm gonna hide and turn off the lights, like always.

Whold it be ok to prepare bags and hand them out wearing a mask and some glasses, with some hand sanitiser inbetween? Just a thought.

I don't know. I wish I was more athletic and had better aim so I could chuck candy at passerby from my porch, but even if I was, it wouldn't solve the problem of trick or treaters usually forming big groups and showing up all at once, which is what usually happens where I am.

I mean, I want to stay safe myself, but I also don't want my front yard to turn into a superspreader event for the neighborhood kids. I also don't want to have mostly kids with parents who treat COVID like nbd showing up at my house.

I love dressing up and handing out candy, and I was so excited to go all out with the decorating because Halloween's on a full moon Saturday--and then COVID happened.

I'm just going to skip it this year.

Two Halloweens ago, I had recently moved across the neighborhood and suddenly had more trick-or-treaters than I had gotten the previous 12 years combined and was cleaned out of candy less than half way through the designated neighborhood trick-or-treat time.

Last year, we got snow and sleet on trick-or-treat night (which is not necessarily on actual Halloween, but rather the last Saturday in October). This made me realize my front steps (the ones up from the sidewalk) are pretty dangerous in slippery conditions due to being steep and narrow (I know they aren't up to code, but since they're original to the house I'm not going to get cited and new steps are not high on the list of things I need to fix). This makes me want to avoid trick-or-treaters altogether for their own safety.

All of that + Covid = I am keeping my light off and not handing out candy this year.

Maybe see if your neighborhood/city is doing any social distancing Halloween events for kids in lieu of regular trick-or-treating?
