Thinking about Count of Monte Cristo and the varieties of political corruption described. Three villains, all career politicians:

Villefort sends an innocent man to prison to protect his family secrets. He's the law and order guy who abuses his father and daughter. He has an affair and commits infanticide to cover it up. His son and wife become murderers. All of this while building himself up as a career prosecutor and royalist toady.

Morcerf is the decorated war hero who built his reputation on an act of treason for profit. He acts out of sexual and professional jealousy, and desperately hides both his ethnicity and his war crimes.

And Danglars, he's just a greedy asshole. He just doesn't care about anything that happens in his house that doesn't increase the bank balance.
