NAYRT but since the secret mentioned specifically D/s AUs I assumed they were talking about the sort of AUs where every single person in the world gets assigned either as dominant or submissive and it is heavily enforced by society and even the law. I think that, based on their description, AYRT thought the secret was referring to that too.

DA That's not the assumption I made from the secret at all, wow.

even more different anon and I didn't get an "everyone in the world is assigned D or S" vibe from the secret either

I've legit never even -heard- of anything like that

I thought the secret meant an AU where the pairing in question was into bdsm, when they aren't in canon

I'm the anon who started the thread, and the anon who explained for me was correct. A D/s AU is an AU where everyone in the world is born either a Dom or a sub, and the society is structured around those designations. (Hence why OP made the comparison with A/B/O, another type of biological imperative AU.)

A fic where the characters are professionally into a BDSM lifestyle (and it replaces their canonical professions) would probably be called a BDSM AU. Calling it a D/s AU would only confuse readers who know D/s AU to mean an AU of the biological imperative variety.

D/s AUs are a specific thing, different from just a fic where the characters are into BDSM (professional or otherwise).

An example would be Dangerous If Unbound, by astolat (fandom: Person of Interest): https://archiveofourown.org/works/1206946

You don't see D/s AUs around as much. ABO took over that niche pretty much.

I loathe that about *both* D/s and A/B/O stories that cling to that trope. DNW!

Yeah, one of the reasons I prefer A/B/O is that I see the gender essentialism and shitty societal norms subverted and outright rejected a lot more in A/B/O. Whereas the basic underlying concept of D/s AUs makes it very difficult to fully subvert those elements.

I haven't sworn off D/s AUs or anything like that. I'm always open to giving one a try if it sounds interesting. But I've never actually found a D/s AU that quite hits the mark for me.

Same - I have a lot of issues with D/s and, frankly, the bulk of A/B/Os that go all dystopian and creepy.

But when it's done 'right' (for me) - fuck yeah. :D Gimme.

Heck yeah, big same.
