Oh man. My dad was like this too! Hugs to you, nonny.

People found it really strange that he was a music teacher and I can't play any instruments or read sheet music. We had a piano in our living room. I asked him to teach me piano for every birthday and christmas for years. He played 3 Blind Mice for me once and told me I was only allowed to talk to him when I could play it all the way through. I was so excited to show him when I found all the right keys and put it all together and all he said was that I was a smart arse who thought I knew everything. Failed every prac exam in HS music class because I couldn't play in front of other people.

I hope your violin playing brings you joy now. People suck but music is great.

The cobbler's child is often the least well-shod. I'm sorry your father was/is such a git.

Thank you. I didn't know that saying, but it is definitely a theme in our relationship. It's nice to look back as an adult and realise I wasn't the defective one.

Damn I can't believe a music teacher of all people was like that! I'm sorry anon.

I always worried I was being too sensitive but I feel like, yes listening to a newbie play anything isn't the most pleasing sound in the world but after probably the second joke about wanting to stab your ears it does start to get to the person trying to learn :/

He was a popular teacher too. Everyone liked him. He's very friendly to everyone outside of the family.

As an adult I can't imagine talking to a kid like that. Even if I had a headache or something. There are ways to get some peace and quiet that don't require you to damage their self-esteem.
