High five! And your mom sucks for joking like that. My family was like that when I tried to learn to play guitar. They thought they were being funny, but it was very hurtful and made me feel like I wasn't progressing, so I put my guitar away and didn't play for years. I picked it up again a few months ago and I had to start from square one again, but without people making fun of me, I can actually hear the difference between how my playing was last month and how it is today.

Sorry your family sucked in this way too and diminished your love of guitar. I know what you mean about putting it away. When I left school and so my easiest access to lessons stopped I tried tuning the violin myself during my summer holidays between that and starting college, and ended up snapping a string. It was the perfect excuse for me to shut the case and never try again because I didn't want my mum to hear me play.

Good luck with your journey getting to know guitar again. It's so much nicer being able to practice without wisecracks about the noise!
