Isn't that the point, though? That she looks more like the rest of us than the usual size 0 perfect stick figure?

(Anonymous) 2020-10-18 08:24 pm (UTC)(link)
Most people don't dress themselves like preteen pregnant boys who scavenge all their clothes from a dumpster. At least the ones I know. I agree with OP, she's styled specifically uncomplimentary to her face and bodyshape.

(Anonymous) 2020-10-19 01:51 am (UTC)(link)
OP - I'm glad I'm not the only one who thinks this.

I think the reason it stokes my dislike of her so much is because it plays into what I dislike about her as a person. She's this person who blindly neglects to edit or tailor herself at all, and seems on some underlying level to view that as a personal virtue. She seems to think she should be accepted and valued exactly as she is, warts and all, regardless of whether she actually has any real merits.

The way she's styled plays into that. Her clothes are drab and ill-fitting and unflattering and rumpled, and yet often a little bit attention-getting at the same time, like they're saying, "Hey! Hey! Look at this slumping, unkempt person. Isn't she brave and authentic for choosing to emphasize how unattractive she is, rather than catering to society like most people?"

Ugh, the selfish ignorance that the world should accommodate her, and not the other way around, and refuse any compromise in the least? Those are the absolute /worst/ characters.
A show catering to that deluded notion is exactly why I couldn't even get past the second episode.

(Anonymous) 2020-10-19 05:21 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah, I don't know the series or the character at all but WOW that's an unflattering haircut on her. She doesn't even look like she's necessarily unattractive, that haircut just makes her look bad.

(Anonymous) 2020-10-18 08:34 pm (UTC)(link)
I think OP knows that's the point, which is why this is a secret.

(Anonymous) 2020-10-19 02:12 am (UTC)(link)
OP - Yup.

Though in my defense, I would never, ever hate a character specifically because they were ugly.

(Anonymous) 2020-10-18 11:56 pm (UTC)(link)
I am sorry if you look like that.

(Anonymous) 2020-10-19 02:06 am (UTC)(link)
NAYRT--I look way worse, so thanks?

(Anonymous) 2020-10-19 02:20 am (UTC)(link)
OP (and not AYRT) - Hannah is a fictional character I dislike greatly for her personality; her appearance is just the icing on the cake of me disliking her.

Unless we're talking about sexual prospects, nobody has any business valuing you or judging you based on how attractive they find you, and I'm sorry your personal appearance got brought into this.

DA

There's a difference between someone who purposefully makes themselves look terrible as a point to 'scorn society and their views' without saying anything about it in the process, and still have the gall to pat themselves on the back. All because they went out in public in a deluded preconception that making themselves look the worst they can proves something to someone or another.

'The better you look, the better you feel' is not an unfounded notion. Self perception will always be your harshest critic... but every head has a shape, every body a size, every individual a style. You don't need to conform to societies standards of beauty, you just need to discover what works for you. Garner your confidence and your beauty in conveying that, not on society.

The point is your attitude. If you go out of your way to make yourself as unappealing as you can, well, that's on you. But if you wear what you have, exist as you do, and don't put barring on how you present effects your day to day life, you're good.

Average looking woman = ugly woman= less worthy of being listened to?

(Anonymous) 2020-10-18 09:21 pm (UTC)(link)
Nah, on several points. 1. Hannah is well below "average looking" even based of the people in my real life (OP picked one of her better looking moments, imo).

And Hannah being a self-entitled, self-involved, miserable, whiny mess 24/7 is what makes her unworthy of being listened to most of the time.

(Anonymous) 2020-10-18 09:57 pm (UTC)(link)
Sadly, this comment is the story of my life.

(Anonymous) 2020-10-19 08:14 am (UTC)(link)
Nope. Sorry, but you're out of the CashCab! So sorry.

(Anonymous) 2020-10-19 12:00 am (UTC)(link)
I might be able to stomach Girls if anyone else played her. She is so ugly on the inside irl I can't stand her face. She is the type of actor who writes herself fan mail.

(Anonymous) 2020-10-19 01:08 am (UTC)(link)
I honestly think Dunham is excessively despised. I think everything she says gets taken in the worst possible way because at some point a year or two into GIRLS’ run, people decided that not only did they hate her, but that they wanted to hate her.

However, she does make it kind of impossible to like her, even if for some reason one WANTS to like her.

I get the impression that honesty of self expression and not editing oneself is her highest value. I suspect she views it as a profound and virtuous human act to speak ones truth, warts and all. And in certain settings, at certain times, it can be a positive, constructive thing to do. But she kind of does it all that time, which just comes across as tone deaf and self-involved to a degree most people find repulsive.

(Anonymous) 2020-10-19 03:17 am (UTC)(link)
I hate her bc she raped her little sister and still downplays and handwaves it, personally. The fact that she's kind of unattractive literally doesn't factor in. She's a hideous person, like on the inside. Even Mr. Rogers wouldn't wanna be that asshole's neighbor.

(Anonymous) 2020-10-19 07:49 pm (UTC)(link)
Well, do you know that her sister "downplays" it and "waves it off" too?

(Anonymous) 2020-10-20 10:03 am (UTC)(link)
She didn't "rape her sister". She looked between her sisters legs once at 7, which her sister, s well as experts in CSA, all have said is normal for a child that age. It's gross of you to misuse a word intended for a serious traumatic issue jsut to make a celebrity you don't like look bad.
