Re: What character is the most tragic in your opinion?
(Anonymous) 2020-10-19 07:05 am (UTC)(link)I suppose. Though I'll have to agree to disagree to a certain point. My first thoughts go to Shakespeare, and Hamlet and Macbeth. Where as Hamlet is intelligent and justified in his actions, but it's ultimately the surrounding cast that declare his downfall. He has no ill intention to those who weren't conspired against his father. Ophelia's insanity was ultimately the result of her fathers influence, even though Hamlet played the major role.
The same with Macbeth. He hears of the great things his BFF Banquo is destined to become, and while Banquo himself is hesitant to believe, and Macbeth is initially entertained/joyed(? It's been a while since I read it) by the news- it's the swift interference of his wife that causes things to grow out of control. Macbeth is left without any choice or action aside from what Lady Macbeth offers him.
Long story short. My opinion of tragedy is more about the circumstances of believing in what you're doing and fighting for what you think is right, only for the world, and everything/one you believed in to be the very thing that set you up and left you no choice but disaster. Or for every card being stacked up against you since birth, and no matter how hard you try, it doesn't make a lick of difference, but that doesn't stop you from trying anyways.
Not two-bit bitterness and committing genocidal acts out of spite. Holding a two decade long grudge (which only ended due to his death) that you hurt the girl you loved by calling her a slur and dedicated your life to destroying everything associated with the Hogwarts house that held the man she chose instead, along with every innocent along the way.
