I got a fairly harsh comment once on a character/narrative choice in an otherwise well-received fic. The comment was a couple of years after I wrote it. I replied basically saying "you know what, I'd probably write this differently now" but I wasn't really into that fandom enough any more to want to do a re-write, so left it as it was.

I did appreciate the comment for making me think about things from a different perspective. But I do feel that with increased passage of time it becomes more likely the author has moved on, improved, doesn't actually care enough to edit or a combination of those things.

I once received concrit on a fic that was over 25 years old. I just kinda chuckled and thanked them for reading.

If the fic is still up I assume the author still wants feedback on it. If they didn't they could take it down or orphan it.

Lol, the other day I logged back into my *deviantart* account for the first time in like a decade, and found a comment criticising something I said in *2007*. Like, holy shit dude.

(Anonymous) 2020-10-20 12:00 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah that's odd.

Edit it, if they want?

(Anonymous) 2020-10-20 12:07 am (UTC)(link)
I mean, I probably wouldn't leave concrit on something 5 years old, myself, but if I got concrit on even my oldest fic, I would consider it. If it was typo or grammar issue (that I agreed with), I would definitely edit the fic. If it was a minor structure issue, I might edit. If it was something that would take a major rewrite to fix, I probably wouldn't do anything with the fic itself, though I might put something in the notes. I don't feel like your analogy quite fits the situation.

I think that the sort of people who think its A-Ok to leave critique are the same people who take no notice of the dates.

(Anonymous) 2020-10-20 02:57 am (UTC)(link)
Where are these people?? I ask for concrit in my author's notes every time and never receive any. It's definitely not because there's nothing to pick up on in my writing!

(Anonymous) 2020-10-20 03:25 am (UTC)(link)
Thats big dick energy.
I wouldn't be surprised if people were a little intimidated at being given free reign to critique an entire work.

Perhaps ease them in by asking about a certain element instead of the entire thing? Critique is such a rare thing in comment sections nowadays that a lot of people are shy when given the go-ahead.

I was taking my cue from the general consensus that if an author is open to concrit they should ask for it. I put 'open to concrit' in the authors notes for every story. Not pushing for it, just letting people know. No one ever takes me up on it. I guess I can understand the reluctance but it really bums me out!

(Anonymous) 2020-10-20 03:39 am (UTC)(link)
Apparently critique is equivalent to stabbing an author in the spleen according to the general public these days. A lot of people consider it taboo or something now, so even when people ask for concrit they won't get it since some people decided their oversensitivity and inability to accept anything but basic complements should apply to everyone else.

(Anonymous) 2020-10-20 11:12 am (UTC)(link)
:( Maybe that's it.

(Anonymous) 2020-10-20 06:09 pm (UTC)(link)
Unless I can find proof that a writer has responded positively to concrit in the past, I won't bother. Too many ask for concrit, say they can handle it, and then get bent out of shape if you point out anything more significant than a typo.

(Anonymous) 2020-10-20 05:24 am (UTC)(link)
There's nothing wrong with leaving critique.

(Anonymous) 2020-10-20 02:31 pm (UTC)(link)
No, there isn't. I think ayrt's point is that one should make sure they are checking the date the fic was posted because it's possible the concrit may not be as useful years after the author improved or quit.

It wouldn't bother me to get that - i get comments on stuff I wrote 15 years ago. If someone wants to do a crit, well - more power to 'em.

(Anonymous) 2020-10-20 02:50 am (UTC)(link)
Bold of folks to assume I'm still checking that email.

I mean, let them get down with their investment I guess. Fans are going to fan. I wouldn't do it myself because I would keep an eye on when it was updated last. But I know some folks it might goad them to update with more story b/c it shows folks are interested still.

I've probably done this a couple times, though aside from maybe once or twice I just forgot how old it was. I used to give critique as a rule when commenting, so I'm sure it has happened, though if it was finished and old I'd be more likely to leave that part out.
I just leave boring ass comments now, so I guess I don't have to worry.

You must be the kind of person who gets comments on their stuff all the time. Must be nice to be so glutted in comments that you can be picky.

(Anonymous) 2020-10-20 04:28 am (UTC)(link)
Oh my gosh, this happened to me. Someone commented on my fic that hasn't been updated since 2009 telling me the pacing needs to be be improved, the writing is a bit wonky, etc etc etc.

No duh, commenter. I was twelve. Also the common reason I've seen for commenting on old fic is that it might give the author a spark of inspiration to update, which, reminding the author of all the reasons why it was abandoned is not a great way to do that

If there's something offensive in my fic that my privileged ass wasn't aware of 15 years ago, I'd sure as hell go in there and edit it. It's today for them in that fandom even if I've left.
