I think that the sort of people who think its A-Ok to leave critique are the same people who take no notice of the dates.

Where are these people?? I ask for concrit in my author's notes every time and never receive any. It's definitely not because there's nothing to pick up on in my writing!

Thats big dick energy.
I wouldn't be surprised if people were a little intimidated at being given free reign to critique an entire work.

Perhaps ease them in by asking about a certain element instead of the entire thing? Critique is such a rare thing in comment sections nowadays that a lot of people are shy when given the go-ahead.

I was taking my cue from the general consensus that if an author is open to concrit they should ask for it. I put 'open to concrit' in the authors notes for every story. Not pushing for it, just letting people know. No one ever takes me up on it. I guess I can understand the reluctance but it really bums me out!

Apparently critique is equivalent to stabbing an author in the spleen according to the general public these days. A lot of people consider it taboo or something now, so even when people ask for concrit they won't get it since some people decided their oversensitivity and inability to accept anything but basic complements should apply to everyone else.

:( Maybe that's it.

Unless I can find proof that a writer has responded positively to concrit in the past, I won't bother. Too many ask for concrit, say they can handle it, and then get bent out of shape if you point out anything more significant than a typo.

There's nothing wrong with leaving critique.

No, there isn't. I think ayrt's point is that one should make sure they are checking the date the fic was posted because it's possible the concrit may not be as useful years after the author improved or quit.
