Maybe it's because the anime rivals-betters the manga in it's quality, so people who like the manga are a bit more defensive about it. In other fandoms, it's a given that the original is a bit better--in FMA, that's highly debatable.

I'm not really in the FMA fandom, but what I have read of the manga and seen of the anime, it seems like the anime producers changed a lot about the characters and the story in the anime. I've decided that I'll eventually get into the fandom, but only when the manga's complete, because that's what I'd prefer to start with.

I hope that doesn't make me a manga elitist, but I know from what I already DID read/see, I liked Winry a lot, and I felt she got the short end of the stick from what I saw in the anime. (But, the anime did allow for this awesome icon to be made.)

But from what I hear, there's going to be a new anime or something? OVAs? I'm fairly open-minded, so I'd probably watch that series (assuming I haven't heard wrong). I just don't like it when the two canons differ so wildly it's like a fanfic where the names are just pastede on yey!

For example, Escaflowne was an anime first. I wanted to give the manga a chance (there are actually two manga series, but only one got translated), but it changed the characterization of Hitomi (the female protagonist) too much. The movie, too. So I'm an original-series anime fan. I wouldn't say an "elitist," because I don't bash the movie or the manga, but I don't like them.

If FMA fans could just be accepting of the other version's existence (even if it's wildly different and, because of those differences "sucks" in that person's opinion), that would be okay (I hope?).

Yep, they are coming out with a new anime series.

The anime did change quite a bit and for the large part, they changed it for the better (in the opinions of a sizable chunk of the fandom), which is the interesting thing and is pretty rare in adaptations and that's why manga fans get so defensive, if I had to guess.

The manga is still ok, I follow it every month, and it might get better--finished works always look better than works-in-progress, I guess. When it is good it is really good, but the villains aren't as interesting to me.

And you're only an elitist if you get personally offended when a person likes one or the other more.
