I feel like people on this comm forget how openly homophobic fandom was not even 10 years ago, hell there's still people like this in fandom now. Not to mention how casually racist a lot of people can be, like, we're really not some progressive utopia...

Oh word. Maybe they weren't around when slash comms had prominent warnings for homosexual relations and authors still got told they were disgusting for writing such perverted things about straight characters.

I feel like we went too far the other way though. Apparently informing readers a character is trans before the sex scenes is transphobia now? It's smut, not gender politics. I clicked the tag for a reason. Of course I have ~genital preferences. My sexuality is not a choice and is not oppressing anyone. JFC.

I remember all the 'it's okay I'm writing m/m, it's not real, gay people are disgusting irl obviously' which was always fun to see parroted around near constantly, never-mind the comms that outright banned gay-content no matter how mild. This was all perfectly acceptable behavior as well! And I don't think this attitude has gone away either, just gone underground because it's not socially acceptable to think us gays are morally deficient degenerates these days.

I don't get not tagging trans!character fic, if the character is cis in canon people are going to naturally assume that as the default, and people that look for trans!character fic won't be able to find the fic, there is literally no downside to tagging it.
