I was raised by books and fanfic.

Why? My dad unplugged the television antenna when I was ten b/c he and mom were out of the house and came back and found me watching it "w/o permission." It was a HALLMARK MOVIE.

He later admitted he over reacted.

They still don't have television. Internet. Yes. I begged for the paper until we got it. DvDs, sure. But TV. Nope. Streaming though makes TV kind of obsolete. (Kind of.)

First of all, what show is this, I never heard of it.

Second, fandom is not a monolith and many of the people who say the first thing are not the same people who say the second thing.

Third, something can have all the attributes on the first list, and with all the good will in the world, that doesn't necessarily make it a good show, and it doesn't make the show to everyone's taste. Of course, it's also true that many shows about pretty white boys aren't very good either and they get a pass on it, which sucks, but still.

If the characters are not canonically fat, that just... makes sense?

You don't send them a skinny cosplayer to show what a canonically fat character looks like, either, if the person is trying to imagine the canon version. Or a super buff version of a canonically weak nerdy character. Or whatever. It just makes no sense to do that.

That doesn't mean a cosplayer can't look great, or that their costumes can't be amazing. It just means the goal in this instance is more about looking most like canon than looking great.

Is your AU idea very unique? Because I do sometimes get the feeling fanfiction in any big fandom is just the same 10 AUs written over and over by different people, so it can be hard to establish ownership over these things.

Just don't read their stuff, bruh. I just skim my fandom friends' fics, pick one element that strikes me as well-done, and focus my comment on that before moving on. No one has to know, everyone feels good, I go on with my day.

Do you have to figure out everything on your own? I always thought the fun thing about really complex fictional worlds was reading all the fan theories people develop, comparing them with my own and boggling over the crazy out there shit.
