Just don't read their stuff, bruh. I just skim my fandom friends' fics, pick one element that strikes me as well-done, and focus my comment on that before moving on. No one has to know, everyone feels good, I go on with my day.

That’s not being spineless, that’s being decent. Telling them their fic is awful would not make them a better writer, it would just make them a bad writer who’s hurt and sad and maybe doesn’t enjoy writing anymore.

If you want to try to help them improve, you could offer to beta for them. It sounds like it’ d be a lot of work, but it’s the one way you may actually be able to help them improve.

I mean... that's a noble offer, but if OP offers to beta with the goal of helping their friend improve, at some point they're going to have to point out the flaws. Sounds like they don't want to do that.

Pointing out flaws in the context of beta reading is a different thing. It's expected that a beta reader will point out flaws and help you improve your fic. It doesn't mean your fic is bad, just that it could be better.

If OP doesn't want to do that, that's totally fine. I'm just saying that if they're going to point out flaws in their friend's work, the way to do it kindly is by doing it in a constructive and invited capacity. Merely telling their friend their work is unreadably bad accomplishes nothing but making their friend feel bad.

Yikes... is that an accurate sample of this person's writing? I used to write like that deliberately for laughs, but... wow.

This background has me rolling. I sadly can't tell if it's serious or poking fun at itself/the genre...

Sorry, I'm still over here guffawing over "erect man-sponge" ...

Same.

I looked at the background and my brain just ... needle-scratched at 'man-sponge'.
