Why the heck everyone washes dishes by hand in fics no matter how rich they are. They'd get a dishwasher. Or robots. Something. It happens in otherwise awesome fics. Sigh.

If it's only a few dishes, it's faster by hand?

Washing dishes by hand is a visually satisfying activity, like talking on a pay phone

If it's my fic, it's probably because I've never had a dishwasher in my life, and I straight up forget they exist, lol.

But also, what the other commenter said: they're an activity for the characters to do that is easy to visualize and kind of satisfying. It's a good way to have characters stand close together and be reaching around each other. It's a good way to have characters work companionably together. You can also demonstrate drama or tension by having a character accidentally drop a dish. It's a common activity that serves the narrative well.

My family has a dishwasher and we still hand wash them first...

I use my dishwasher for most things, but I have a lot dishes I don't put in there because they are too small, too big, or shouldn't go in there (the good knives, wood utensils, the cast iron pan, the insulated travel mug, delicate glasses, etc.) Those get hand washed.

You're right, though, there's a lot of hand washing of dishes!
