Ohhh... that makes sense. MZB used to run anthologies or a zine. So, if she saw Lackey's writing and liked it, she would have gotten her an IN on a publishing deal by introducing her to editors and stuff.

This was before authors stopped doing that b/c of fear of lawsuits reasons.

Well, ironically Lackey herself had a no-fanfic policy for years because she was afraid of a lawsuit like what happened to MZB. I was glad to hear she's relented in that stance, though.
