141 - OP

(Anonymous) 2008-12-31 10:30 pm (UTC)(link)
Yes, but those shows aren't aimed at men. And the majority of those watching them are women.

And I'm not talking about actual intelligence. I'm talking about the perceptions of women created by shows that are aimed at and successful with a female audience. They seem to indicate that we only care about vapid, shallow things. That looks are what's most important. That gossip and drama is what interests us above most else.

The difference between men watching dumb shows and women watching them is that men don't have to prove anything. The gender imbalance is still tipped to benefit them. Also, Cops and wrestling are aimed at men, but they aren't a reflection of the average man, whereas Tyra and talk shows are supposed to be about 'real women.'

I realize my secret was probably too broad, that there are a lot of holes in my logic, but I'm speaking of the visceral feelings I have when I see those shows. My worries. I'm sorry if that offended people, I'm sure you're not the only one, but that's why it's a secret.

Again, what kind of perception of men am I supposed to gleam from the shows aimed at men? Gender stereotypes run both ways. Trust me, the men that I know are just as offended by the stereotypes reflected in programming aimed at them.

The anon below summed up my feelings pretty succinctly. Women are not judged by the same standards that men are. Male stereotypes are awful too, but it's easier for them to overcome them when it comes to jobs, pay, respect, etc...

Women are not judged by the same standards that men are.

No shit, Sherlock. But to blame that on some women's tv habits and not the sexism that has existed for millenia is utterly ludicrous.

Who says I'm blaming it on that? Yes, those TV shows are symptom not a cause, but they can still make me sad and piss me off, can't they?

So, what do you mean by your secret?

but they can still make me sad and piss me off, can't they?

But that's not what they're doing. They making you make huge assumptions about how women are perceived. That's going a bit past "sad and pissed off".

What I mean is that I worry television is just another influence on the sexism of this country (America). I worry that it's exacerbating what already exists in a much subtler way.

Well, I do find that people of both genders often expect women to be what those television shows depict on a smaller scale. Perhaps this is just my surroundings speaking.

This was kind of my point. We're talking about television viewing, not sexism in general.

Here's a novel idea. If someone uses the shows that some women choose to watch (nevermind that a] some men do too and b] whether or not they are stupid is subjective) justification to see women as unequal to men, they have underlying prejudices.

And it's a whole lot better to, oh gosh I don't know, work on eliminating those root prejudices instead of blaming women and bemoaning what some women choose to watch.

Re: 141 - OP

(Anonymous) 2008-12-31 10:43 pm (UTC)(link)
But, women shouldn't have to prove anything either. So let the women who like watching the Lifetime network do so, and the ones who like watching explosions do so. The blame should lie with the network execs, not with people's individual tastes.

Re: 141 - OP

(Anonymous) 2008-12-31 10:49 pm (UTC)(link)
That's a very good point, and I find myself wishing I'd worded my secret a bit differently.

Also, Cops and wrestling are aimed at men, but they aren't a reflection of the average man, whereas Tyra and talk shows are supposed to be about 'real women.'

Wow, that's wonderfully hypocritical of you.

there are a lot of holes in my logic

For there to be holes in your logic, you have to have logic in the first place. What you have is a broad assumptions based on your own prejudices.

Re: 141 - OP

(Anonymous) 2008-12-31 11:02 pm (UTC)(link)
How is that hypocritical? Criminals aren't average. Pro-wrestlers aren't average. Those shows don't even pretend to be reflections of average men.

Talk shows profess to be about real women. While I don't think they actually are, it angers me that they claim to be, and I worry that some will believe they actually are.
