137. Don't worry, I hate Hetalia too. And if anyone actually knew their history, they'd know that Italy wasn't some sort of pushover nation. Probably most of the fans are Americans who don't understand the deep impact of WWII on the world, but especially on Europe. (I'm American, however.)

Way to generalize there! Because no one in the fandom can be history buffs or majors who know that shit.

I'm a European Hetalia fan, thankyouverymuch.

*shock* You must be a liar since the Hetalia fandom is made up of privileged American white kids with no knowledge of history!!!

Yes, someone did tell me this before, as sad as it sounds.

I'm an Italian Hetalia fan.

I'm a history major, I'm not American, and members of my family fought in World War II. I wouldn't be involved in Hetalia fandom at all if I wasn't so into history. You're probably one of the "Americans who don't understand the deep impact of WWII on the world" yourself, from your wording.

That's one thing that annoys me as well. I know people who read the comic often are prompted to do their own reading and learn something about history, but it's just careless for the author to promote false notions and stereotypes like that, even if it's supposed to be funny. Because a lot of casual readers could take that away as fact.

Same could be said of every historical series ever. Although I knew that Italy was stereotyped as useless in the WWs before Hetalia.

And he's not promoting stereotypes as much as making fun of them.

Sadly, tons of BS about historical events is regularly dolled out to people through far more influential books, movies, shows, and comics. Hetalia worries me, but it probably won't worm its way into mainstream culture.

I'm a US History major, and while some things in popular culture irk me, I've tried to get over it. I even enjoy Hetalia, but I'm also very aware of the bad influence it can have over people who go in and read it without any prior knowledge of the events it portrays. But... History, even inaccurate portrayals of it, has always been and always will be used for entertainment. Plenty of people reading Hetalia are probably in it for the cute guys, and while some will get curious enough to look up stuff on their own, most probably won't and will take at least some of what they've read at face value. That's sad, and things should definitely not be that way, but the only thing knowledgeable people can do is get active and try to get others interested in the truth behind what they're exposed to. Historians and history students can do that much, I guess.

And hey, for kicks, try asking any random American about John Hanson or Samuel Huntington. Or about who was responsible for sewing the first American flag, even.

There was actually some fan discussion not too long ago about WWI and Italy kicking ass and taking names at Vittorio Veneto. For the most part, people seem to grasp that these characters are based on stereotypes, and I think it's a little presumptuous to say that the majority of fans for a series revolving around history don't care to learn anything about the world. There are plenty of other, less despised series with copious boylove; if that were all I were after, I'd read one of them instead.

(American as well, for what it's worth. Which is not much, apparently, but whatever.)

137. I am American and a history/economics major. I do my damnedest, as someone who is primarily focused on military history, to promote understanding of war and the human condition during it. I also had both Eastern European and American relatives who were deeply affected by WWII, and if you presume that any of these things are invalid because I happen to enjoy a gag comic about history, then fuck you. I'm so sick and tired of opinionated jackasses such as yourself making vast, ignorant assumptions about readers of this one damn series. You've made yourself look just as bad as the worst Hetalia fan that you could possibly dredge up, and rightfully so.

Re: 137

(Anonymous) 2009-01-02 04:42 am (UTC)(link)
You're free to your opinion. But many people in the Hetalia fandom really have had emotional ties to war and are history majors, so I think you're doing them a disservice by making generalizations like that.
