And if anyone actually knew their history, they'd know that Italy wasn't some sort of pushover nation

That's one thing that annoys me as well. I know people who read the comic often are prompted to do their own reading and learn something about history, but it's just careless for the author to promote false notions and stereotypes like that, even if it's supposed to be funny. Because a lot of casual readers could take that away as fact.

Same could be said of every historical series ever. Although I knew that Italy was stereotyped as useless in the WWs before Hetalia.

And he's not promoting stereotypes as much as making fun of them.

Sadly, tons of BS about historical events is regularly dolled out to people through far more influential books, movies, shows, and comics. Hetalia worries me, but it probably won't worm its way into mainstream culture.

I'm a US History major, and while some things in popular culture irk me, I've tried to get over it. I even enjoy Hetalia, but I'm also very aware of the bad influence it can have over people who go in and read it without any prior knowledge of the events it portrays. But... History, even inaccurate portrayals of it, has always been and always will be used for entertainment. Plenty of people reading Hetalia are probably in it for the cute guys, and while some will get curious enough to look up stuff on their own, most probably won't and will take at least some of what they've read at face value. That's sad, and things should definitely not be that way, but the only thing knowledgeable people can do is get active and try to get others interested in the truth behind what they're exposed to. Historians and history students can do that much, I guess.

And hey, for kicks, try asking any random American about John Hanson or Samuel Huntington. Or about who was responsible for sewing the first American flag, even.
