Not really a congrats given nearly half the country voted for Trump and voted him in in the first place. Like fuck.

You have a point, but we really need this silver lining.

ayrt

True, true. Sorry, I've been so stressed lately that election is just not helping at all.

Yes, I'm being a broken record when I say this, but we need to sit down and have some serious conversations with the other side, tempting as it is to ridicule them.

It isn't great when it comes this close to one's country losing its democracy and going full blow fascist and dictatorship. We can't let it happen, or ever let it come this close again.

How do you plan on getting the other side to want to sit down and have serious conversations and listen? I think they've long since proven they're not interested in that.

You're assuming everyone who voted for Trump is a flag waving, shrieking, "fuck-your-feelings," racist Karen foaming at the mouth. I'm not talking about them. Some simply stood by, or genuinely thought that Biden or Harris would be worse for the country (considering past controversies from both their careers), or just went with Trump because they didn't know any better. People who don't really understand what it is to vote in the national interest vs "well, I heard that guy's gonna raise taxes or let babies be killed or let those libtards run rampant." People who don't get Biden is more moderate than far-left, people who hear "socialism" and actually believe it's going to destroy the country.

We need to have serious conversations with those folks. We don't need to lump everyone together in one group, or call them stupid or crazy for making a mistake. Yeah, I get it. After four years of this bullshit, how could ANYONE vote for the Mango Mussolini? It's easier to label the other side as a lost cause because the truth is a lot harder to swallow -- they felt like they had no choice, they thought Biden was worse.

Not at all. Not even one bit. The Trump stuff made it more obvious and on the surface - the diehard Trump people are very straightforward about not wanting to have conversations. But everything I said was true of the institutional Republican party before Donald Trump came along.

When the Republican party is in power, it's full on no-holds-barred conservatism with no compromises. That was the case for GWB even before Trump came along. And when Republicans are out of power, they simultaneously demand compromise from Democrats while engaging in completely unchecked obstructionism - that's what we saw during the Obama administration, again, before Trump took over the party.

I simply don't understand what the plan is for getting the Republican party of Bush, Cheney, Palin, and McConnell to actually sit around the table and listen to reason - let alone the die-hard Trumpers. It would be nice if it was possible. I don't see what reason there is for thinking that it's possible.

Not exactly? I think people who are eligible to vote but not registered still outnumber registered voters of all parties. Which, idk, I feel like if disgust at Trump's behavior (or, sadly, admiration for it) didn't motivate them to register and vote, nothing will, so it still isn't great, but it's not half the country. Also Biden got 4,000,000+ more votes than Trump.

Pretty sure that's not the case. About ~150-160 million people voted this year and about ~70 million are not old enough to vote. So that leaves about 100 million people left, and that includes people who are old enough to vote but ineligible (non-citizens and people with felony convictions, mostly).
