The season was extremely limited due to the pandemic - stage shows were suspended because attending would put a lot of people very close to each other in the audience. Only the 18 shows that opened before February 19, 2020 were considered eligible for the 2020 online Tony Awards ceremony.

Oh okay lol, so it was pandemic related. Is 18 shows not a lot? I love musicals but I don't actually ever follow them when they're on stage, usually it happens after the fact for me, haha.

Basically there were only 18 shows available to be nominated in total but there were only four that were *musicals,* of which Percy Jackson was one. So you'd think, being there are only four musicals, they'd just nominate all four for Best Musical, right? Wrong. Percy Jackson was the only musical that didn't receive a single nom, despite being the only musical that could be eligible for Best Original Score (the others are all jukebox musicals that use pre-existing music, instead only plays ended up getting nominated in that category for the first time in Tony history). The lead actor of Moulin Rouge also was the only nominee in the Best Actor category, snubbing the lead of Percy Jackson who was the only other possible nom (the other two musicals were female led with no lead actor).

Is 18 shows not a lot? It was 34 last time around, mid-thirties has been pretty typical for the last few years.
