I have never understood that objection to the soulmates AU, because the whole point of the soulmate AU to me is that all of that stuff works itself out. The point of a soulmate AU is that there's never creeping metaphysical dread about any of that stuff, because the whole universe is designed in a way where it has positive outcomes. That's why I don't find the regular, run-of-the-mill soulmate AU creepy (obviously you can have versions of the trope where it's less positive).
