I know it's not that deep, but I can't help thinking about the wider setting in those AUs. The idea of a world where everyone knows they have a match out there is kind of terrifying to me, especially the kinds where other people can also see who your soulmate is because there's visible skin markings or something. It sets an extra expectation that everyone will settle down because finding the right person is so much simpler than it is IRL. Must suck for anyone whose soulmate is dead or whose mark was destroyed because they lost the limb it was on. How does a world like that treat singles? Are they discriminated against? Pitied? It also removes an individual's agency in choosing their own partner.

nayrt

I am a huge fan of The Lobster, but prob not in the way writers of soulmates AU want for their fics.

See, these things would be interesting to see in a fic/things to explore. I never read soulmate fics, btw, but I would be interested in reading a fic about a character who either
a) doesn't want to be sould bonded or whatever to anyone (I guess this is done often?) But actively resists and genuinely can't stand the person
b) is fated to be with someone evil, hell maybe the person is locked away, idk (or someone good if they're the bad guy -- also likely done, but handled seriously not just oh I can resist)
C) the person they are fated to be with dies or is already dead etc.

I'm sure these have been done, but treated seriously, not just in a trophy cute manner (which is fine, if I'm in the mood for it) but the idea of exploring the society and how the individual fits there is interesting. And since it's fic, each writer has their own rules and conventions...

Not to be all "it's not that deep" but it's not that deep

If you are someone who can't stop themselves from this kind of fantasy world building, then straight-up soulmate stories probably aren't for you, no. But it seems like everyone on here is so unable to stop thinking about the wider world building implications of soulmate AUs that it becomes impossible for them to see why basic soulmate stories are satisfying for people who aren't thinking in terms of world building complexity.

You can insist that until the cows come home, but you can't stop people from questioning a trope just because it's supposedly "not for them". Soulmate in itself is not a totally noncontroversial concept, so it's a given fictional works exploring the idea would receive mixed responses.
