idk I'm lol European so we get subtitles like 99% of the time, but it's just what you're used to I guess? It's a short switch your brain has to make from purely just watching and... also half reading what's being said, but idk I guess it's enough of a difference to actually be an effort to some people?

The other way around, I also get lol confused when I have to suddenly listen to my native language and I have to turn the volume on because I wasn't so much listening as reading 8(

I agree with you though lol it's not that much of an effort 8(

lmao idk maybe their brain works lazier 8(

Personally I think they being too aware of the subtitles gives them that perception that reading subtitles while watching TV is hard.

This isn't considering for people who do have a hard time of doing it though.

I can't speak for anyone else, but that is sometimes the case with me. But then, I have ADD that usually manifests itself as obsessive focus or needless organization.

As somebody who researches verbal vs. visual stimuli in short-term-memory, this perplexes me too. A couple of experiments have shown that it's actually faster for people to respond to text that's flashed on a screen than it is for a command issued through headphones.*

(*not that that really proves anything yet, as you can design any damn experiment to show anything you want, but.)

There's also the Stroop effect experiment, with a list of the names of colors being printed in different colors than their names (e.g., the word "red" is printed in blue ink), interfering with people's ability to verbally list the colors they see without being distracted by the words...

I don't know if it is really laziness as it is that subtitles may split people's attention, they read the text but then lose a bit of the visual experience, because their concentration is divided. So yes, I do think a bit of the visual and full experience may be lost when you have to read subtitles.

Signs usually are only a few large words and a simple picture that doesn't move and is usually only a few colors. But with subs you have the subs plus the movement and the sound and changing colors, and that can be a lot to process, even if it doesn't take a lot. I can get by with subtitles just fine, but when I don't have subs, I also tend to become much more engrossed and focused on what is going on when I don't have to read them.

Well, it means that you have to keep your eyes open. There have been times when I'm tired while watching TV, and it does become a lot easier to close my eyes and just listen.

My criticism of that secret is that I wonder: is it really that bad to be lazy when watching anime? It's entertainment. It's similarly "lazy" to go to the beach and spend the entire time alternating between napping and reading a magazine (as opposed to, idk, swimming or volleyball or whatever). But no one has disdain for someone who is lazy in THAT way.

Exactly! Saying "you're lazy at being entertained!" just doesn't make any damn sense.

Disclaimer: the only thing approaching anime I've ever watched is Yu-Gi-Oh: the Abridged Series and my experience with subtitles is mostly French films (and I speak some French, but I like the safety-net English subtitles on) and the times when the guy in my icon talks (the Hiro guy, not the Nathan guy). So, um, I'm not really qualified to say anything.

But from an outsider's perspecive, it sure sounds silly.

Oh my god, I love your icon.

But to contribute to the discussion:
I find it strange that people are seen as lazy when they don't want to read the subtitels, I much prefer turning on the subtitels to be lazy (which SUHUCKS here because people think relaxing = no subtitles and thus ALL MOVIES ARE DUBBED and it drives me crazy, I want to see movies in their original language, guys).

I did watch anime, but always subbed. Maybe it has to do with the fact that English isn't my first language.

I know plenty of people who prefer to watch their anime dubbed, but none of them have ever given 'too lazy to read subtitles' as the reason. (Usually it's one or more of: prefer dub voices, find subs distracting, visual or reading impairment.) I suspect it's conjecture on the OP's part.
