...suck less at reading?

(Anonymous) 2009-01-02 11:24 pm (UTC)(link)
No, you can read it perfectly. The problem is inherent to reading, because we communicate just as much on how we say something as much as what is said. If you watch something not in a language you speak just subbed without rewatching the raw or a dub, you have only truly heard half the dialogue. Sorry.
pikabot: (gray fullburster)

[personal profile] pikabot 2009-01-02 11:30 pm (UTC)(link)
Uh, no. Believe it or not, it is possible to listen to something and read subtitles at the same time.

(Anonymous) 2009-01-02 11:37 pm (UTC)(link)
But you read ahead of the dialogue, or sometimes, out of order since Japan has different sentence structure. If it was meant to be watched with subtitles it would have been made with subtitles. Take the extra 20 minutes and watch it raw with your sub. If you are too lazy to do that then just read a manga or something.

[personal profile] pikabot 2009-01-02 11:41 pm (UTC)(link)
...and? Whoopdeefucking shit. I don't understand Japanese anyways, so I don't think watching it raw would correct any issues with the sentence structure. And what the hell do you mean by 'watch it raw with your sub'? Isn't that what subs ARE? You make no sense.

This is a really bizarre form of elitism.

(Anonymous) 2009-01-03 12:09 am (UTC)(link)
Watching it raw means you have your full visual attention on the action on the screen, and your full aural attention on the dialogue. This isn't a bizarre form of elitism, this is how movies, tv series, etc. were meant to be viewed.

Raw/Dub: Full Visual Attention on Screen, Dialogue is processed aurally.

Sub: Split visual attention between action and subs, dialogue being processed visually and maybe also aurally but with these processing going on at different times--I may read a word before I hear it, for example.

It's a totally different experience. I told this to a poster above you, but try watching an English movie with the subs on. It's not the same thing.

Watching it raw, with no subs there, gives you time to at least try to aurally process the dialogue and get the full visual immersion in the action.

Adaptation. You learns it.

It is for me, not for you.
pikabot: (rasengan fixes everything!)

[personal profile] pikabot 2009-01-03 12:24 am (UTC)(link)
This is easily the stupidest argument I've had in months so I'm going to jus tend it here, except to say one thing: I've watched English movies with subs on, and it's the same damn thing except that I get to occasionally note where the subtitles differ from the actual dialogue.

(Anonymous) 2009-01-03 01:00 am (UTC)(link)
Given your Naruto/Soul Eater/Bleach/One Piece icons all over this thread, somehow I doubt that anything you watch has much meaning to begin with.
pikabot: (super cute smile)

[personal profile] pikabot 2009-01-03 01:02 am (UTC)(link)
LOL, okay.

[identity profile] etherealtsuki.livejournal.com 2009-01-03 01:33 am (UTC)(link)
Oh man, trying to discredit her when your faulty "truth" fails in your face? Never try debating without learning a few things, anon.

[identity profile] etherealtsuki.livejournal.com 2009-01-02 11:43 pm (UTC)(link)
Ugh, no. Actually, I can fit in the dialog just fine. It's you have the problem with it, don't assume it's the same with everyone else.

[identity profile] kristenell.livejournal.com 2009-01-03 12:10 am (UTC)(link)
You know it really has nothing to do with sucking at reading, people read differently, and not everyone reads at the same pace, and if they read at a pace that is outside their comfort level they do lose something in the process.

It doesn't mean they are stupid, it doesn't mean they are lazy, it doesn't even mean they are bad readers, it is just their brains handle things in a different way. While I get by with subs just fine and I can enjoy shows with them, I am not going to lie that if I can handle the dub then I will take that over subtitles, mostly because I can focus more on the visuals and non spoken elements of the show.

[identity profile] etherealtsuki.livejournal.com 2009-01-03 12:14 am (UTC)(link)
But that's different than what anon saying that you can't possibly see the show and catch the visual nuisances if you're reading.

[identity profile] kristenell.livejournal.com 2009-01-03 12:18 am (UTC)(link)
I am not speaking for the anon who got snippy at the end or whatever, I just don't think people should jump on others and say that they should just "read better", which is what I was responding too.

Although I guess they do act as a counterbalance to the original secret which is just condescending as the above anon.
pikabot: (grog)

[personal profile] pikabot 2009-01-03 12:26 am (UTC)(link)
If you actually miss out on half the dialogue (as in, half the lines, which is what I'm actually responding to, not the weird audio/visual information talk the anon got into) because you can't keep up...yeah, I'm sorry, you suck at reading. It's not very difficult.

[identity profile] kristenell.livejournal.com 2009-01-03 12:35 am (UTC)(link)
And if that is the case, then just not sucking isn't really the easiest answer, because it isn't that simple. It isn't difficult for you, but that doesn't mean it might not be for other people. Just because something comes easily to you or me, doesn't mean that all people are like that.

And it might just be that way with subtitles for those people, they could be able to read other things just fine, but with subtitles that might be a struggle where in others areas it isn't.
pikabot: (Dunning Smith)

[personal profile] pikabot 2009-01-03 12:40 am (UTC)(link)
'suck less' doesn't literally mean 'you are bad at something, fix that'. It means 'the problem there is on your end, not the medium's. Don't blame the medium or generalize based on it'.

[identity profile] kristenell.livejournal.com 2009-01-03 12:45 am (UTC)(link)
I can get behind that. Just, after working with illiteracy and people who have struggled with reading, your wording kind of ticked off one of those things in my head.

There seems to be a lot of generalizing on both sides here though.
pikabot: (chad)

[personal profile] pikabot 2009-01-03 12:50 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah, well, what can I say, I get flippant when arguing with anons and likely trolls.
