yes, they're an asshole because they don't like to watch dubbed anime. clearly, their moral compass is utterly warped.

get a life.

totally missed the point, didn't you.

you must be a dub hater.

No, they're an asshole because they consider people "dead to them" for not liking dubs, you idiot.

Selective reading is fun! That way you never have to think about anything!

Actually, people who don't watch subs because they're too lazy to, not the people who like dubs in general.

I guess selective reading is fun!

Because mistyping one letter--and that's what it was, a typo, and I think you probably know that--is the same thing as selectively reading something to get your own point out of it instead of the actual point the poster was trying to make.

Kay. Thanks for setting me straight.

Who cares why they don't like subs? It's not so big an issue that your opinion of the person has to change completely. It's a preference, that's all, and it doesn't matter what the reason for it is.

Actually, judging people to be "dead to them" because they're too lazy to read words while watching a freaking anime is still assholish. What the hell, that's what people are judging people on? Whether they enjoy reading words on a screen or not?

Ah, but you forget; Japanese is the HOLY GRAIL of languages. HOW DARE someone like something in English.

I think a lot of people forget that there are some awesome, subtitled, non-Japanese movies out there, too, and it's not like you hear the argument as much about those. Which I find really weird. I'd be more :/ if someone I knew refused to watch Pan's Labyrinth because "if I wanted to read I wouldn't be watching a movie!" than I would be someone choosing a dub over a sub for the same reason -- but then, neither of those is a big deal. If they don't enjoy it, they don't enjoy it -- and it's just something we're all in to enjoy, so in a less-rambling summary WTF AT THIS. XD;

Re: 105

Yeah, they really, really seem to. Although, I did hear from a few American acquaintances that video rental shops actually had to inform customers with regards to movies like Pan's Labyrinth and Letters from Iwo Jima (they're the only two movies I can think of off-hand) that they had subtitles. Some people would then put said movies back :/ But hey, if you can't get along with reading subtitles for whatever reason, that's your choice.

It just really, really bugs me when you get people like the OP who seem to think that Japanese is the best language ever and that English can never compare. I speak both and you know what? I wouldn't say one is better than another. And ... you never get anyone saying 'French is better than-' or 'German is better than-' or even 'Chinese is better than-'. I don't get it. They're all languages.

Re: 105

[identity profile] trustyoursins.livejournal.com 2009-01-03 05:32 am (UTC)(link)
Ohhh, yeah, the video store where I worked definitely had to do that. In fact, pretty much ANY movie that was in another language with subtitles, I just basically told people about it right up front whether I was told to or not. I was kind of sad that a majority of them put them back, but hey, it was their night out and their choice of what they wanted to watch. I'm more sad that there's no English-language option, really -- they're missing some great movies, though I can understand why.

Mostly I just don't hear people complaining about the fact that people don't want to watch subtitles of anything in any other language. Which... it's the exact same thing. Why is it different if it's Japanese? You're right, I don't ever see this kind of elitism with any other language, and it's really, really bizarre. I love the way Japanese sounds, but I love the way pretty much every foreign language sounds. O_o
