126. I'm not gonna fault someone for being a recent fan of the show, it's the "SNL HAS SUCKED FOR YEARS NOW/IT WAS SO MUCH BETTER IN [insert 70s/80s/90s]/THE DIGITAL SHORTS ARE THE ONLY FUNNY THING/TINA FEY WAS THE ONLY REASON I WATCHED" people that drive me up the damn wall.

Re: 120, 121, 126

[identity profile] 3goodtimes.livejournal.com 2009-01-02 11:37 pm (UTC)(link)
Seriously. SNL has it's good days and bad days (same as when it was on in the 70s, 80s, and 90s), but if you like the show, you like the damn show. Elitest watchers annoy the crap out of me.

Re: 120, 121, 126

I wish I could remember where I read it, but the best theory I ever came across on why people always think the older episodes are better is that they don't actually remember the majority of what was played, but thanks to reruns courtesy of Comedy Central and E! they can see the old episodes. Except those are all stripped to an hour of rebroadcast material, so of course the weaker stuff gets taken out. Then you end up with an hour of mostly good material, leaving the viewer with a sense that they could do no wrong in the 70s/80s/90s.

My personal theory is also that the show has always been ahead of its time, so of course in the future the old stuff will look modern and genius!

Elitism is so ugly. I mean, I'll proudly admit if I was a fan of something before it was more recognized, but I'm not going to hate on someone for getting into the game late. There's plenty of stuff I discovered way after the bulk of its respective fandom. I don't think duration should be the ONLY qualifier for a fan.

Re: 120, 121, 126

[identity profile] 3goodtimes.livejournal.com 2009-01-02 11:52 pm (UTC)(link)
That makes sense. And there's also the fact that the cast members from those eras became stars later, so it's easy to look back and see creative genius. I remember people bitching about the Will Ferrell years, but now that he's a big star his seasons are watched with nostalgia.

I've watched SNL with my parents since I was little, and I can honestly say I enjoy the old and new seasons equally as much. I don't begrudge preference in other people, but I do think it's silly to be snobby about it.

Duration is certainly not a qualifier in my book, especially with a show as long-standing and changeable as SNL.

Re: 120, 121, 126

[identity profile] spifftronica.livejournal.com 2009-01-03 12:02 am (UTC)(link)
Oh, excellent point. Yes, I vividly remember people not always believing Ferrell to be the god among men he is considered now. Haha, I suppose if Casey Wilson ever becomes a huge success, people might look back and actually think she was doing decent work from her early SNL beginnings (for the record, she's the only cast member I have a problem with, in that I don't find her funny and she hasn't stuck out at all to me, and most of the time I find her to merely be emulating Kristen Wiig. Oh well).

My dad was offered a writing job with the show in '75, but turned it down thinking it wouldn't be a sure thing (I can hate on him now, but seriously, that's how television is. It could have easily flopped and he'd be down and out. Oh, hindsight). So my dad was always insistent that I watch it and bemoan his bad decision with him when I came along. That's just how my situation worked out. I do think it's cool when people have grown up with it, and I like being able to discuss older aspects of the show with fans, but I'll talk about recent occurrences just as freely and happily.

If only all fandoms had a ban on duration and longevity rankings.

Holy crap, I feel the exact same way about Casey Wilson! I don't know what it is, but she just sticks out of every scene like a sore thumb. Over-acting. I want to like her, but I just can't.

Your poor dad! My dad turned down a chance to be in Wilco, so I suppose I can relate a bit.

Re: 120, 121, 126

[identity profile] spifftronica.livejournal.com 2009-01-03 12:11 am (UTC)(link)
She is such a mess. The only time I've thoroughly enjoyed a performance by her was her paralyzed stripper in the Ashton Kutcher episode last season. But every other time is, like you said, over-acting and just not providing to the comedic nature of the sketches. On the reverse side, I think Bobby Moynihan came out swinging and knocked it out of the park over and over and over again. And even though Abby and Michaela really haven't done anything as of yet, watching their You Tube videos gives me MAJOR hope for the things they'll be able to accomplish. Michaela's Arianna Huffington is a hoot, and Abby has a killer Joan Cusack impression that is begging for Joan to actually be relevant to something so it can be busted out!

Oh man, think of all the street cred he'd have!

[identity profile] sunshine-hippie.livejournal.com 2009-01-03 12:10 am (UTC)(link)
True, true. Point well taken and I totally agree.
I agree with the person who also responded, if you like the show you like the show! I think that every show has a guaranteed laugh, imho. Sometimes it's only one, sometimes it's many. But I have never walked away from ANY SNL episode thinking "God that SUCKED!" You know? I'm satisfied. And I've been satisified since the 70s. *snap finger in Z-formation* HOLLA.

Re: 120, 121, 126

[identity profile] spifftronica.livejournal.com 2009-01-03 12:18 am (UTC)(link)
The closest I've come to walking away completely upset at how bad an episode was recently was the Ellen Page episode. But that was mostly because Ellen Page was so bad, dragging a huge chunk of the show down with her (By the way, that's funny, because we're talking about Wilco in the other string of this thread). But thanks to the nature of the show, I knew it could come back the very next week and redeem itself.

I just hope it never falls into that MadTV pattern of having one or two AMAZING sketches while everything else is just terrible. With SNL, I ALWAYS feel like even with bad sketches, you can tell the writers tried as best they could, and there are a few redeeming qualities.

[identity profile] blergg.livejournal.com 2009-01-03 09:10 am (UTC)(link)
I think it DOES go through good and bad phases (meaning more than a few episodes), but yeah, the people who are like SNL SUCKS NOW IT WAS SOOOOOOO GOOD EARLY ON make me want to put my head through a wall as well (I happen to LOOOVE the early 2000's, which is the time most people are talking about when they go off on their elitism crap).

Re: 120, 121, 126

[identity profile] spifftronica.livejournal.com 2009-01-03 10:42 am (UTC)(link)
It's Jimmy Fallon, man. He ruined a lot of people's tastes for the show.

[identity profile] blergg.livejournal.com 2009-01-03 06:47 pm (UTC)(link)
Aw, I liked Fallon. :( Although I can definitely see why people didn't, and really, I just liked him 'cause he's cute in my opinion ;D

Then you're probably definitely excited for Conan's move in a few months!

Haha, yes :D And I love Conan much more than Fallon, so now it's just like, I get Conan as normal, AND an extra show. I just hope Fallon doesn't suck, lol.
