I like dubs. There, I said it. It's not that I *refuse* to watch subtitles, I watch subs, too, but I'll give my reasons for liking dubs.
1. I feel like hearing something in a language I understand to be more "organic." I do not know Japanese and I'm not going to pretend to. I have gone from watching an anime subbed, to watching the dub and thinking "So THAT'S how you pronounce that name!" - I just didn't get it in the reading/Japanese - whereas my native language conveyed it to me. Little things like that are important to me.
2. I'm a very visual person. When I'm watching an anime, especially for the first time, I enjoy seeing the artwork, and seeing everything on the screen. Having the words superimposed over the visuals can be distracting to me.
3. Very often, I watch anime the same way I watch regular TV: While I'm doing something else. I do this often while painting, and I usually do this with stuff I've seen before. When I'm doing that, I'm glancing at the TV, then back to whatever I'm working on and whatever I'm "watching" becomes "partially radio."
4. Sometimes, I actually prefer the English voices. - Again, maybe it's the whole "it feels more organic to me to hear the story I'm watching in my own language." This goes especially for characters who, in their canons, are actually supposed to be speaking English, such as the cast of Trigun or the crew of the Bebop.
Now, now, I may throw out "I'm lazy" as a SHORT ANSWER, but really, it's not that. I'll certainlly watch anime in sub if I'm entertaining a friend and *they* would rather watch the sub. It's not "anti-intellecualism." Some people just have a preference. And NO ONE likes to be called stupid for what they enjoy, especially in regards to WHAT CARTOONS THEY WATCH.
Yes, yes, I just called anime "cartoons," too.
These kind of preferences really shouldn't be taken so damned seriously. I have no desire to deal with people will look down upon others over this kind of thing.
