(Anonymous) 2009-01-03 05:55 am (UTC)(link)I can tell you straight from my family history that I DO know what it's like to have a "crappy home life", especially during those few years Dad lost his job. I can appreciate that Schultz brought groundbreaking ideas to comics, and believe me I want to punch the lights out of those unrealistically HAPPY HAPPY JOY JOY Family Circus kids too. It's that Charlie Brown's character does nothing for me; he's there to remind me about my troubles which I've been working so hard to take care of, but does nothing to help. I prefer a character who acknowledges his troubles but keeps on going rather than drag everyone else down in their pit of woes; that in itself is amazing to me and garners my respect.
Re: 155 OT
I suppose we'll never agree on Charlie Brown, but I still love him. He was often the kid who did triumph over his woes to stand up for doing the right thing, if you remember. And I don't think it was about respecting him, just relating.
Anyway, it's about preference more than anything and I can't fault you for having a different one. I guess I reacted viscerally because that character means a lot to me.
