It's that rare kind of celebrity death that doesn't just affect one particular fandom. Millions of people, people who are into all sorts of other things, watch the show on a casual basis, and he snuck his way into being part of the household.

I dreamed of being on the show but I knew it would never happen, because I'm abysmal at trivia. But most of the people I talk to regularly either had real aspirations of playing someday or actually had competed before, and there was a huge nexus of sentiment. I honestly thought I would cry a lot more than I did. Maybe I will when his last episode airs. It doesn't fully sink in when he's still there on TV.

Carrie Fisher's death also affected me a lot, but this one was only the second one that has really hit me. Those two were two of the very few celebrities that have had an actual, real impact on my life. The world is really a worse place without them.

He seemed like a very decent man. It upset me to hear about his passing, too.

Not since Carrie Fisher, Nick Cordero, Ken Shimura, David Bowie and Sean Connery that I've sobbed this hard regarding a celebrity death. Alex Trebek was one of a kind.
